S&W can't and won't provide any help for two reasons. One is that it's too old, they don't have parts for revolvers produced back in the 70's. The second reason is that the warranty is long expired and the current lifetime warranty only applies to revolvers made after 1989.

Yeah, it really stinks. However you do have to keep in mind that we are talking about a 40 year old revolver. Try taking a 40 year old Mustang into your local Ford dealer and asking for a warranty repair, won't happen.

As for the cause, IMO there is only one possible cause. That is a defect in the steel forging for the frame. It can happen and if your father had shot that gun when he first purchased it S&W would have covered this defect under the original warranty. Unfortunately today too much time has passed. Best thing to do now is make it a Safe Queen and look for something else to shoot.

I hope xpdnc posts back and let's us know how things turned out for him. Perhaps his experience will be different than your experience, Scooter?

Man I feel for ya, that really stinks. I used to own a model 19 in blue back in the 80's and shot a lot of hot 357 reloads through it, but I've never seen one crack there before. Even though it is now out of warranty maybe S&W can help a bother out. All you can do is ask, good luck...

While it can't hurt to ask, S&W has a long standing policy of not working on any revolvers that they don't have a good stock of repair parts for. In addition if they decide that a revolver is unsafe and unrepairable they will NOT return that revolver for any reason. Finally, if the revolver predates the lifetime warranty they won't offer any warranty repair. The fact is that S&W was under different ownership prior to 1989 so in effect, while the brand hasn't changed, it was a different company when that model 19 was made. The ONLY exception to this is that the current company will still honor safety related recalls that date back to the Bangor Punta ownership.

Bottomline is this. It won't hurt to call and talk to them about this cracked frame. However, keep in mind that the model 19 is no longer in production and that defective frame will be considered unsafe. So, if that gun is shipped to S&W it will not be returned and the best possible offer will likely be a discount on a new 686.

Have you tried taking it to a gunsmith and see if they can repair it maybe tig weld it right up to the S&W logo?

A cracked frame cannot be repaired. The frame will have to be replaced, and only S&W will do that after you send it to them. Now weather S&W will warrant the fix is up to them but I think you have a good chance. It will have to go to a FFL when they send it back to you cause the frame carries the s/n and it will be different than the one you have.
