I had known about the recall from trying to do a bit of research, but thanks for the info. I'm worried about giving up the gun long enough for S&W to mod it Once I get to shooting it I may just want to keep it around. Maybe I can send it in while I am waiting for my reloading dies to come in for it.
I guarantee that i will break in that barrel. Since I reload all my rounds I tend to shoot a bit too much if that's even possible
The deal has been struck. I just need to go to the bank and pick up the cash for it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't taking advantage of a friend, but still getting to make a decent deal.
Thanks for all the info.

At 450 it's a good deal,, however recently S&W has phased out the recall and are no longer doing this modification for free or if at all. Quite simply it's likely that they no longer have the parts to modify these guns, after all it's probably been more than 25 years since it was made.
If you can't get the modification done, there is one solution that will probably work out. That is to limit your primer choices to those from CCI or Speer and avoid using Federal primers. As I understand it, the issue was primer "flowback" into the hole in the firing pin bushing. I suspect the change involved reducing the diameter of the firing pin and the hole in the bushing for the firing pin by a small ammount. This means that a primer that is less sensitive and made using a slightly thicker stock will probably work just fine when shooting Magnums. Another option is to load your Magnums to a bit less pressure than the highest allowed. If you combine a less than peak pressure level with a lighter 125 or 130 grain bullet, the peak pressure developed will most likely be less than what is required to cause primer flowback and still have an excellent SD loading. Finally, 38 spl. and 38 +P loads don't have any reported issues with primer flowback in the early L frames, so you can shoot these for years without any concern.

Thanks for the info Scooter123. I tend to use CCI and Winchester almost all of the time. I just like that they tend to be a bit more "stable" than most of the others. I will check on the recall immediately to see what S&W say about it.

Check the yoke. If there is a "M" there, it has been modified.

That just isn't right taking advantage of your friend. You should send it to me right away to ease your mind.

Just some follow up info:
I just got off the phone with Smith & Wesson. It has not been modified for the recall. They are still fixing them and she sais I should have a return label within 48 hours so I guess the new (old) guy is going on a trip. I miss him already.
I'm really hooked on these revolvers. They seem so much more "elegant and classy" than the autos although I feel the same about my 1911s.

S&W will return your 586 to you in pristine condition. You made a great purchase at a very good price, and will get a free "gun smith" once-over by S&W at no cost to you. Win-Win!
