I even feel retarded asking this...
I'm a complete noob when it comes to handguns let alone revolvers so this is going to sound compeletely stupid. Is there any revolver that can take different barrels/ cylinders to essentially make a new gun (kinda like how the encore contender works only as a revolver). I like revolvers and I'd like a small caliber (.22 or .17) and a big one (.38 or .40) and I think it'd be neat to have them both in one gun
Thanks

I dont recall...old out of production Dan Wesson resolvers where sold in pistol packs, same caliber but the ability to change out barrel lengths. I don't know of any other revolver on the market that had this feature nor multi caliber revolers that would fit what your're looking for. Some of your Heritage 22 revolvers and shoot 22 short, 22 long and 22 magnums...but that's about it. You can shoot .38spc out of a .357 revolver...but not the other way around.
Welcome to the forums...

Some of the Dan Wesson frames were offered in multiple calibers ranging from 22Lr up to 357 Magnums. They may have even offered multiple caliber pistol kit's at some point, however I spent 30 years shooting with cameras during most of DW's production history so I don't know if that's a fact. In addition, going from a centerfire to a rimfire would require a change at the firing pin, so a rimfire to centerfire pistol pak would not be a likely combination.
Kind of sad they've ceased making the wheelguns. Back in the 70's they were the most accurate handgun you could purchase and I was spending my spare money on lenses and the like. Now when I can finally afford a Pistol Pack, they've been long out of production and are damned hard to find.
The key to this ability with the Dan Wesson guns is that they were designed to use a tensioned barrel that was user changeable. You won't find any current revolver with this feature and I suspect that the reason why CZ USA dropped re-introducing the DW revolver is the same as for any other gun maker. On a revolver the Barrel/Cylinder gap is a feature with the potential for harm to the shooter or others nearby. Set that gap too large and injuries or fires might result. So, for liability reasons, todays revolvers don't allow the user to change the barrel and let that B/C gap exceed what is safe.
Bad news is you can't change the bore diameter. The good news is that there are gunsmiths offering multiple caliber options on one gun as long as the bullet diameter doesn't vary too much. I know the S&W 686 can be set up to shoot 38 spl. 357 Magnums, 9mm Parabellum, 380 ACP, 38 Super, and possibly some obscure 38's. All it takes is Money, probably 300 bucks to purchase each cylinder and have it fitted to your gun and the particular caliber you want. BTW, bore spec for 38 spl. and 357 Magnums is 0.357 inch, for the 9mm's it's 0.355 inch. So there may be some accuracy loss in shooting a 9mm round in a 686 modified to do it, however I've seen reports that the accuracy loss ranges from minimal to borderline depending on the shooter who's done this. I suspect at combat ranges the 9mm will shoot fine, at 50 or 100 yards you might have problems getting on paper.
BTW, I have a S&W model 610 that is technically a 10mm revolver. However, because it allows the use of moon clips it will also permit the use of the 40 S&W, which is what I mainly use it for. If you've ever priced 10mm ammo you'll understand why. On a good day I've grouped it at 2 1/4 inch at 35 yards from a rest with the cheap 40 caliber Federal Champion, so it's plenty accurate. I also love the moon clips, I'll load up a bunch before a range session and bring the fired casings home still in the clips for reloading.
One of these day's I plan on having my 620 set up to use clips and if I'm feeling flush enough might have a 9mm cylinder fitted to it. Truth is that traditional revolver ammo is getting expensive and a bit hard to find, so having a cheap shooting 9mm option will allow me to get a wheelgun fix with the 620, which I just love. BTW, the 620 is a variant of the 686+ with a tensioned barrel in a semi lugged shroud and with the right ammo it'll group under 3/4 inch at 35 yards.

There are chamber inserts for large-caliber revolvers that will allow them to shoot .22; iirc seeing them in .45...
Yep, I did.

Since the insert is the entire length of your "barrel" for the .22...I'd be amazed if there wasn't.

Yes, I too have a few older Dan Wessons. (2-15's & 1 M22) However, I don't have a stainless steel version. I'm hearing prices in the $1200.00 range for the soon-to-be-introduced model by CZ, and that's a bit rich for my tastes. Oh well, I suppose somebody will pop for them...just not me.
