Totally agree. I don't worry about ballistics because I've done my research I carry are round that I know will serve it's purpose even when encountering less than optimal situations.
Why is it that when ever somebody ask about an SD round someone always chimes in with "shot placement", "You have to hit what your aiming", "It doesn't matter what round you use if can't hit what you aim at."
The question was not "I'm a crappy shot what's the best SD ammo for me?"

Because I feel shot placement is more important than ballistics when you're looking at defensive rounds.

Tiger Woods could win PGA a tournament with some crap surplus golfballs.

I could not win one if I had the best ball ever made...

I guess I just feel that practice is where its at. There are many types of DA out there anymore and for the most part (more tha there ever has been in the past)...giving same class/same firearm they're all pretty close to each other. Golden Saber, Hornady FTX, DPX, hyda-shock, Gold Dot, PDX1, Win Ranger, etc...all will be about the same give or take when you're looking at the same caliber/weight and firearm.

What's the variable here then?

You...and me...and anyone else with the firearm...the user than their shot placement is the key.

We agree on that. There are many good SD loads, the newer rounds have a bit of an advantage in that they are less prone to clogging up and not expanding. There is no magic round there are just good choices. This discussion was about a good choice of ammo and caliber so that it will perform to the best of it's ability though as many unforeseen situations as possible. Nothing magical no anal retentive "this is the best" theres just good and better and having that slight advantage when you life counts on it is always good.

Where not talking flight characteristic where talking terminal performance. Deep penetration through barriers and at less than optimal angles and expansion.

Try to find a 158gr lead semi wadcutter HP +P it was the old FBI Load before they switched to semi autos and has been proven one of the best defensive rounds even when fired from a snub nose..Winchester I believe originally developed it.

A 38+p will get the job done. Shot placement is the Key here.

I cronied some Federal HydraShok +P (what I carry sometimes) from my 1.8" J frame and they leave the muzzle at an average of 1068 fps. Should work just fine.

My Model 36 gets 110gr HydraShok also. The 158gr is too hard to hit where you want and the recoil sucks. I feel way better with the smaller bullet and better accuracy.

Yeah, the 110gn bullets hit point of aim, the 158gn hit 4" high at 7 yards.

I'm carrying Speer GDHP-SB 130gr.+P in my S&W 360 M&P. I could use 357 mags but it's not necessary. I have used a S&W revolver for over 25 years as CCW. Like posted before, if in a car, use that as your defense & run them over. If their coming towards you with weapon, wait till you have a good shot. When I dress up for a wedding or someplace fancy that makes it hard to conceal a weapon. I have a NAA 22 mag pistol with the folding grip. Looks like a cell phone in my pocket but this is a up close & personnal shot to the head, chest, or back to solve a problem with HP ammo. Bottom line, in any caliber, PLACEMENT IS EVERYTHING!
