Allocated 2 older Smiths, Got me to thinking...

Yesterday I allocated a S&W 29-2, and a S&W 27-2 from Gun Broker. Both guns came from the same estate and look to be in great shape. Once I have both in-hand I'll post pics.

This allocation got me to thinking and wondering how many younger revolver shooters lurk around here on XDTalk? I consider myself young at 25... to give a point of reference.

I started out shooting automatics, and hadn't given much care to revolvers until I stumbled into a bunch of .38 Special ammo for free. I have to say that shooting the tight little ragged-hole groups revolvers seem to produce for me is pretty addictive. I probably won't be carrying either of the S&W's for CCW, as my XD is a lot more convenient, but I'm planning on getting some decent .38's and using the 27-2 as my home defense gun. (I know the 27-2 is a .357, I'm just not inclined to use a magnum load for home defense)

So how many younger revolver shooters we have here?

I'm 39 now but my first centerfire gun, was a model 19 that I bought when I was 24. It is still one of my favorite shooters. And it started a BAD addiction to K and J frame smiths.

My latest find is an Improved I frame from 1954. It is a 38 S&W . I bought it because it looked lonely, no other reason.

The old victory models are pretty cool. I was looking at a British Lend-Lease S&W the other day, but passed it up due to the price.

The funny thing is that the 27-2 is going to be the first revolver I've ever owned. The 29-2 is going to my dad since he's wanted the "Dirty Harry" gun for as long as I can remember. I've been trying to buy the 27-2 from my great-grandfather's old collection for the past 5 years, so when the opportunity came to buy both at once, we jumped on it immediately.

27 and I <3 revolvers.

I don't mind polymer guns...but it's nothing compared to a nice hunk of American history in your hands.

I have a M29-3, a Super Blackhawk and an SP101 currently.

I need a nice fullsize .357, either a GP or maybe a Model 19/66. Or a Python...

as well as a Vaquero in .45 LC.

When I was 18 (I'm 23 now) the first handgun I ever shot was a .44 mag!

I don't own any revolvers...yet. But I love shooting them!

It is good to see interest in revolvers by some of the younger crowd here.

When I first "got into" hand guns I was enamored with semi-autos. Over time that attitude just changed. I consider revolvers to be our primary home defense weapons (backed up by a shottie ). Mechnically they may be a bit more complex, but the over-riding advantage of a revolver is if, when you pull the trigger it goes "click"... you just pull the trigger again... until it goes "bang." In the event we have a "moment of greatest need," that ability to just fire again is a great advantage under extreme stress... no "tap, rack, bang" needed.

I have to say that the current buyer's market is a lot better than it's been in a long time. The economic crunch a lot of people are feeling are putting some interesting pieces back on the market that otherwise would never see the light of day. I've been bitten by the revolver bug, but there are few choices currently in production I'd want to actually buy. Rugers seem like the best deal going for new. Come to think of it, Ruger seems like the only choice I would take seriously. I have nothing against Taurus, but I've never held one that I thought looked good or felt right in my hand.

I can overlook the move from craftsmanship to C&C mechanization. I could even overlook the fact that modern S&W finishes have no luster or character like the older Smiths do. I cannot, however, overlook the locking mechanism put on all new Smiths... and the reasoning that got it put there.
