We shot over 500 rounds of +P ammo in about five hours during the training. I cut a knuckle and sprained a wrist. One of my friends sliced his finger open. One of my partners broke a bone in her hand.

Good times.
Was that the "Short Barrel" Gold Dot?
I`m thinking they may be a little milder than some +P`s , but even so that must have been brutal. 50 rounds through mine at the range, and I`m done!
To the OP, I have a 442 and like it. I haven`t tried the Ruger, so can`t comment on that.
Also, the 442 and 642 are available without the Lock , but don`t know how available.
Regards, Pete

they are great guns, but I feel like the .38spl is a bit wimpy for SD purposes. Consider a trigger job done by a good smith, otherwise you will struggle to get a good group at the range.

I owned and pocket carried a 642 for a while.
Great gun and I liked the CTC LG-405 grips on it.
I've seen new ones at the gun shows lately that did not have the lock.

Decided it was a bit thick for me to pocket carry and went another route.
But I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a small revolver.
I've handled a few LCRs, but I've never fired one.
They are very light, I would imagine +P would be brutal to shoot in the LCR..

I also would say the 38sp isn't a wimpy SD round.
But then again, I trust a 380auto for SD at times...

No these were custom-loaded high-pressure .38 JSP's that the department had stockpiled when we carried 4" S&W revolvers back in the 90's. They had thousands of rounds of it already, so instead of buying new practice ammo, we just shoot it instead.

They were basically made for the 4 inch barrel Smiths, and they really hurt coming out of a snub nose. A lot.

I`ll bet! I get a kick out of these guys that want to shoot .357`s out of the even lighter models!!
Just checked Gunbroker and there`s some no-lock 442`s and 642`s.

Thanks for all the input guys... I'm really considering this revolver, the LCR would be a second option, but I have my mind on a new one for $475, looks like a good price or overpriced? thanks

Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth.

Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.
