The "
shrouded hammers" are integral to specific models, the Bodyguard series, not replacement parts that can be added on. Colt once had an add on shroud for the Detective Special, but I don't recall any such attachable shroud being made for the J frame Smiths.
"
Bobbed hammers" are regular hammers that have had the hammer spur ground down either by a gunsmith or the owner to reduce the likelihood of snagging during the draw. Some gunsmiths won't perform this procedure because it lessens the mass of the hammer, reducing its weight. Sometimes (not always) this reduced weight, if used in conjunction with a lighter hammer spring and shooting ammo with hard primers, will cause light hammer strikes and cause sporadic misfires.
The best solution for me is the "
internal hammer" of the S&W Centennial series where the hammer is fully enclosed inside the frame. This makes the revolver double action only.
