Yup....

I've been a PC gamer for the whole cycle.

Back when there was only 1/2 a shelf at any given PC/gaming store dedicated to PC games (mostly adventure games and crappy Myst ripoffs), to the heyday when there were games with seemingly nothing BUT PC games, to now, when there's only about a 1/2 a shelf again.

It makes me sad.

Anyone remember when PC games used to come in the big 8.5x11 boxes with the full sized 50 page game manuals.

Man those were the days.

the problem with PC games is there are too many variables. The machines are always, and i mean always progressing, you have to keep upgrading to play the latest games. And then the software and hardware might not like each other, and then you get random crashes for no apparent reason, because that is what PCs do. . no thanks, i dont need to deal with crap. Ill put in my disk and play. now. and upgrade only once every 6 years or so.

I like some games on the pc like warcraft, civilization, command&conquer and so on but for me most shooter style games that I really like such as rainbow six, ghost recon, splinter cell and stuff are way to difficult on a pc not really the game itself but mostly the controls. I'll stick with my ps2 for now until I get an xbox 360. I like some pc games but I mostly stick with console games, although I do suddenly have an urg to play oregon trail lol damn its been awhile havnt played that game since the old green screen apple computers an floppy discs lol

The constantly changing hardware demands were the main reason why I gave up on PC gaming and bought a PS3. I am a casual gamer and do not have the time or inclination to fight with hardware and drivers and patches and tweaks just to get the latest game to run properly. Its way too much work for someone who only plays a few games a year.

I built my computer 2 years ago. I have not found a PC game out on the market today it cannot run, most at 80% graphical quality or better. It crashes less often than my X-box 360 or my friend's PS3. If you pick your hardware out correctly you don't have compatibility problems like that.

PCs do require a little bit more thought. But when you can play a game for 45 minutes, then browse the internet and write a paper on your console you give me a call and let me know...because I'll be impressed.

Besides, you'll never convince me that RTS games don't suck bigtime on consoles.

You just can't move an army with a funny little joystick. It takes a keyboard, a mouse, and about a dozen pre-defined hotkeys.

i concede that RTS sucks the big one on consoles. however, I can browse the internet and play games on a PS3 or Wii if i really wanted. And i dont think being able to write a paper on your gaming machine really constitutes an advantage. . .

also, i dont have to deal with games demanding that I be online first so they can check and make sure im not playing a bootlegged game or somesuch.

Watch what happens as Linux usage explodes.
Since Tivo added a step between turning on your computer and watching something, people are now ready for an OS on their primary screen- be it a TV (cathode), LCD, Plasma, computer, whatever...
Secondary developers in the gaming industry are all over open source and graphic cards are seeing lots more Linux support.
In 5 years, your primary viewing screen will have Linux and will run your favorite games (Halo V) seamlessly, wirelessly, perfectly, no external hardware needed with game purchase made through the device itself.
Five years, maybe less.
