Has anyone had to have a PS3 repaired?

So this is the deal. I go out but MW3 and play for tem minutes and the doorbell rings so I turn everything off and emerge from the basement mancave. My new struts came UPS I put them away and then returned to the mancave to keep on killin terrorists and the PS3 will no longer read discs. AHhIhhhhh So I search the interweds looking for something to help and I learn how to restart and so a system restore. I go down the list of restore options and it wipes all my info out and still wont play discs. Through further searches it looks like I have found the lazer to be craped out. Now the question is has anybody sent their console in for repair? Either through Sony or PSPros or anything like that. What was the cost and turnaround time?

my 60gb didnt read discs, I bought a blu ray drive on ebay and swapped it in for $60gb, works fine. Have to be really careful installing it tho, theres tiny cables you gotta watch out for. If you got fat fingers, I would be really careful trying to do this yourself. Theres a lot of videos on youtube on how to change out a blu ray drive.

It could also just be the laser going bad, so you dont have to change out the entire drive

Happened to mine a couple years back. Same scenario. Would do everything else but read disc. 80gig fat.

Since you're out of warranty, you might do what FTW suggested; look on ebay and do it yourself... you'll also have access to spare parts.

I spent $160 to send it to Sony and was without for about two weeks.

My 80 gig fatboy took a poop this am. YLOD for me though. I'm looking for someone locally to fix mine. So far I have had quotes for around 100 bucks. And a 3 day turnaround time.Hope it all works out for you, if mine were the disc error, I'd fix it myself. But with this problem, I haven't the foggiest idea how to fix it, let alone have the right tools.

PsPros want $119.99 + shipping with turnaround of about 7 days and Sony is about $160 and however long they feel like taking by the way it sounds. Looked on the webs and found a lazer and it was $78 that is a direct replacement. I have a nerdy friend I may try to bribe with a nudy mag and some Boone's Farm, or whatever they are into, to fix it for me.
