I'm graduating! -OCS update

Just wanted to let everyone know I'm graduating from the USMC OCS this week. Very exited. Only reason I'm graduating is a misdiagnosis by medical I went in to medical because my foot swelled up, they diagnosed me with cellulitus, put me on meds and sent me back. Did all the events, and then found out after the 12 mile hike I have 3 stress fractures, but due to the mix-up I was already done=graduating. Got told exactly what I did to get them (they knew from the injury the exact brand of boot I had purchased that plus a high arch =stress fracture.

Not as hard physically as Boot camp, a lot harder mentally. Practically no externally induced stress and not enough sleep trying to lead and pass tests was really hard.

But yeah so I have 1 year of school left before my commissioning, So yup any suggestions in life for an aspiring 2nd lieutenant?

Congrats!

Good luck with the rest of it.

What brand boot were you using?

And...

When you finally get back to the Fleet as a 2cd Lt, listen to your senior NCO's (but you already knew that )

Congrats on making it through OCS! It was a while ago but I still remember putting that place in my rear view mirror. Just know when you go across the street to TBS that even though you are a 2nd Lt, you are going to be treated like a little kid. It gets real old but just get through the pain and get to your follow on school. Life gets much better after TBS. What contract are you on? Air or ground?

Thats good advice thanks, I have a flight contract, was going to drop it to go ground (easier to go down then up) but the foot is making me reconsider, was suggested to get a bone density test, if I pass it I'll still go ground, If I'm on the lighter bone side, I'm probably going to go air. and spend 2 years trying to get my bone density up (supposedly you can do that in a 24 month period, thank God I have 13 months to heal up for TBS)

Ultimately I want to be a Marine officer, the particular MOS isn't why I'm here.

Although I really respect this...be sure to think long and hard about dropping that air contract. If you go ground, just know that at TBS it is all about your final standing in the company and about quality spread. You might end up getting shafted on MOS. Yes it is great to be a Marine Officer but I know plenty that hate their jobs.

Here is a good example: My two roommates who are both great guys. One was a prior 0311, tactically proficent in the field, all around great leader, finished in the top third in the company. My other roommate couldn't tie his boots if his life depended on it. Tactical mistakes in the field for some reason actually worked out for the better of the plt's attack due to shear luck, finished in the bottom third of the company.

You'll find that ground intel is the holy grail of MOS at TBS. Well the guy that couldn't tie his boots ended up getting ground intel and my other friend that wanted nothing more than being a plt commander leading Marines in combat ended up going LogO. Reason behind it...quality spread.

My .02 cents. You have the air contract, this is your one chance to fly the most sick aircraft in the world, don't pass it up. You want to work with Marines? Out of Primary go rotary and either be right above their heads providing CAS or fly the big 53s and drop a stick of Marines off in a hot LZ. Or go my route and fly fast pointy things. There is always time for a B billet where you can go boots on the ground and do a FAC tour. Hell, right now some guys finishing up at the Harrier and Hornet rags are doing FAC tours before they even get to a fleet squadron.

What ever route you go, good luck! Hopefully long down the road you don't look up and say to yourself, damn I couldn't have been in one of those...
