'Marine of the Year' Arrested for Attempted Murder

Not sure how defensible his actions are, but the charge is absurd. I certainly feel for him in that situation. I hope he can mount a successful defense.

LAWRENCE, Mass. — A veteran recently named "Marine of the Year" for his service in Iraq (search) was charged with attempted murder after firing a shotgun from his apartment window as a group of noisy revelers stood outside a nightclub, police said.

Two people were hit by bullet fragments and suffered minor injuries.

Daniel Cotnoir (search), 33, had called police minutes earlier to complain about the noise coming from the street shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, The Lawrence Eagle-Tribune reported.

He later told authorities someone had thrown an empty bottle through his bedroom window and he feared for the safety of his wife and two daughters, who were home, the newspaper reported.

Cotnoir was being held on $100,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

"It was the craziest night of my life," said Kelvin Castro, 20, one of the two people injured. "I don't know what that guy's intentions were."

Cotnoir has frequently called police to complain about noise and fights outside the Punto Finale (search) nightclub. Last year, police said, he claimed someone leaving the club had fired a gunshot at his apartment.

During his tour in Iraq last year, Cotnoir had been a military mortician responsible for preparing soldiers for open-casket funerals.

The job took a heavy psychological toll, he told the Eagle-Tribune in an interview last month after the Marine Corps (search) Times named Cotnoir its "Marine of the Year," an award presented to him at a ceremony in Washington. At the time, he was getting counseling at a veterans hospital.

"It's a lot harder to talk about the job now than it was at the time to actually do it," Cotnoir told the newspaper then. "The stories I've gained from my deployment aren't the kind of stories you share."

This veteran needs help, and there are many more coming home that will need help as well.

Given the news story probably doesn't tell all, since we know how they "are".

I feel for our veterans that come home every day and the ones who are deployed to the sandbox. I'm not sure what type of a defense he could drum up here except some type of a shell shock/insanity plea, but whatever it is, I wish him luck with it.

They will probably sweep him under the rug like they have done to so many other vets.

Yeah, if he ends up in prison then they don't need to pay any benefits. It's called the wacked-out veteran's retirement plan.

"yeah, we need you guys to do a job for us. But when you're done, piss off and leave us alone."

I don't know anything more about this case than the article. But it would be nice if the locals raised money for this guy's defense. We have a local radio guy here who does a lot of work like that - named Kim Peterson.

I don't know if this Marine was in the wrong or not. Just because you served your country, it doesn't give you the right to act like a renegade and break laws. However, it's a damn shame when some of our guys come back with such a limited skill set that they have a difficult time getting a decent job and which is further compounded by having to reintroduce themselves to their family after being away.

More disturbing to me is when they make the ultimate sacrafice and have nothing for their children's education. Sean Hannity has put forth a great effort to help with his annual Freedom Concerts. I don't agree with him on all issues; but I am sincerely grateful that he's using his public power to help vets.

People in prison have better benefits than vets. Why is that?

the media fails to note that the Marine had called police numerous times to report the goings on in the street below his window and no one came. his complaints to the crowd were met with thrown bottles and threats of violence to him and his family. i probably would have done the same. geez, people. they're called scatter guns for a reason.

I couldnt find a good link, but the update on this is "not-guilty". He was found to be within the appropriate escalation of force to repel what he saw as an attack on his home.

Because the state can make money off prisons and prisoners....not vets.....
