Check local surplus stores. And personally I would not put MRE's in a Preparedness kit. They are not all good. Also I noticed the site Gorilla posted did not include heaters with their boxes. Which doesnt make sense because all MRE's are supposed to come with heaters. So keep looking you may be able to find them cheaper with heaters somewhere else.

where is Stanton? i could probly get you some real MREs with heaters, if you are not in a hurry. let me know what quantity, etc. your looking for. If you are across the country it probably wouldnt be worth the prohibitive shipping costs

Oh and ive never seen MREs like the ones on the SG website, ive been eating em for four years.

MRE's should be a short term meal solution. The are packed full of calories and other stuff so you don't want to eat them as a sole source of food. I've got about 2 weeks worth of MRE's plus 2 weeks of Tray Rations. Your best bet is to go with freeze dried which has a shelf life of 30+ years. Just add water and you are good to go. MREs are good for about 5 years depending on how they are stored so they are not as cost effective as freeze dried.

Here are two good sources for MRE's. I purchased about $600 in chow from longlifefood last month in MRE's and tray rations. Good stuff, heat and eat, awesome for camping.

I incorporate some form of emergency food in my weekly eating. MREs typically suck(a few exceptions). I prefer Mountain House dehydrated food. You have to add water, generally a cup per ration, but the taste is better IMO.

I will tell you something that you may overlook. If you are going to have an emergency food supply, be sure you can eat it. Both from a taste standpoint as well as a "laxitive" standpoint. What I mean by the latter is that you don't want to be in a position that you only have emergency rations and come to the realization that the one you chose gives you the runs. Very bad. Very bad indeed. Especially if you have limited toilet paper, or no sanitation facilities at all.

Your local REI or other hiking/camping superstore will normally have a couple different brands and several entree choices. Pick up a couple and "try before you buy" them in bulk. You can usually get single, double, or larger packs. On a side note, Mountain House canned bulk food is on backorder, last time I checked. Be aware. you can still get the packs, just not the 7# cans.

On MREs, don't put blind faith into military surplus ads. The government doen not let their own stuff get out to you. They may be similar, but you would not want to get caught with some food that was stamper "Property of the U.S. government". There are hundreds of military "style" foods. Just don't think that you will be eating the exact same thing the defenders of our country are eating. Like said above, you do not want to go full on MREs without some kind of regular food to supplement it. Regular canned goods will do for that purpose. Keep a can opener that works by hand.

Good words to live by. Another place to pick up Mountain House Freeze Dried is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart sells the foil packages at a good price to try before you get serious about #10 cans.

I've seen quite a few shortages of food storage items not just freeze dried, plus the premium price or freeze dried is crazy. The government purchased all of the canned cheese and butter when it hit the docks over the last few months. Makes one wonder what's up.
