NOTHING will be better than the hog hunt, you are just saying that to make yourself feel better about not being able to go!
However, I will concede that if there ever was a good reason not to go on the NET hog hunt, it would be for Marine training...well, Army training would be more beneficial, but you get what you can get! TOTP for bustin' on Justin, the new Marine OCS recruit!

what are my chances
I have been thinking of enlisting in the reserves for about a year now and sat my wife down today and we agree'd that it would be a good choice for our family.
I am in good shape physically and mentally but i am 38 years old and was wondering if anyone knew my chances of getting accepted into the national gaurd? If so what am i looking at in basic training so i can prepare myself and be sure that i will be able to perform in the physical department. Any advice would be appreciated there are many variables that bring me to this path but i will go into it knowing i will give my life or take lives to protect the man or woman next to me and their family and mine at home. God bless the men and women that are serving now and if i am not able to serve with you my heart is there with you always. |

The recruiter will be able to help you figure out what you need to work on to prepare. Once you sign a contract with the Army, you'll do RSP (recruit sustainment program), at least I think that's what it's called, where you will do some time with the others in your area doing some basic drills, some PT, and you'll work on learning either the M16A2 or the M4 for disassembly and cleaning. If you have a 4-year college degree, you'll be able to do officer candidate school. I believe the enlistment money is only for those who are going enlisted. I don't think there are any signing bonuses for the NG for officer school, but there is an officer ascension bonus. If you're in good shape, you don't have much of a record (they'll check for everything down to traffic violations), you pass the physical at MEPS, and you're smarter than a tree stump on your ASVAB test, you should be fine.

At age 38, to score a 300 on the PFT, you need to do 73 pushups, 76 situps, and run 2 miles in 13:36...that's for a perfect score. You get 2:00 to do the situps and pushups.
However, you are only required to score 60 points on each event, which would be 33 pushups, 38 situps, and 18:18 on the 2 mile run. You only need to score 50 points per event minimum and no less than 150 overall to graduate basic, but once you get to AIT (you job training), you'll need to do 60 points per event and no less than 180 overall.
