Aberdeen Proving Grounds

I thought this was an appropriate place to post this...I was curious if anyone has worked there? I met a guy who will have put 32 years in there and the pension package he talked about was impressive and said they were in need or personnel. I was curious what kind of jobs are there and what not. My wife has always had an interest in the military and she's always keeping an eye out for a better use of her degree in mathematics than an performance analyst for a large international investment company.

I used to do quite a bit of contract work there on the Javelin program. There are several supporting companies that provide a variety of services for them. However I don't know what it's like there now. The work that I did was 10+ yrs ago. For mathematics, I would think she would be more likely to find something with one of these supporting companies working to monitor suppliers and their quality output (e.g., statistical type of analysis and sampling recommendations for lot approvals, etc).

I did not work there, but I worked with Aberdeen testing personnel on a USMC project:

No, I'm not in the vid, but I know the guys who are.

All that to say, yes, she would be able to put her math degree to good use with them. The people I worked with were all top notch professionals, who cared about what they were doing for us in the military. She may travel, but that's not a bad thing. She may go to 29 Palms, which could be a bad thing.

I think it would be a blast to abuse stuff to see how long it takes to break it.

So, you don't have a choice on where you work or what you do? It's not like enlisting and then being deployed right?

No, the ones that went to the stumps with us volunteered to go, then were screened. One was sent back to aberdeen because of unprofessional conduct. They do not tolerate that sort of thing.
The extra pay for travel is good.

The retirement plan for government civilians isn't quite as good today as the plan of yesterday. Additionally, all civilian DoD employees are or will soon be under a new personnel system, called NSPS. The days of the GS system, administered by OPM are going bye-bye.

An individual base doesn't offer any better pay, retirement plan, benefits, etc than another one. You are hired either as a contract employee or as a government employee (what may differ is the PD and pay band/step for that position). Start with USAjobs.gov; on that site, you will can search vacancies by job series, location and a few other criteria. It might be a good idea to check out that site and then come back with questions, based on your research.

I didn't expect pay at one site to be better than another, just that Aberdeen is within driving distance from the southern part of the county I live in.

For what it's worth I spend a lot of time at the ATC and the Army Research Lab located on ATC. It's a beautiful part of the country and the people at the center are honest, hard working professionals. They do an important job for this country and I've been honored to play any role in that equation.
