Another former USAF E-5 here.
Lackland -> Chanute -> Seymour Johnson Work Avionics Instruments on B-52G's and KC-135's from 1977 to 1981 so that would make me one of Lemay's SAC trained killer! Left the service in 1981 after 4 years. I was not the most 'military rules' kind of guy so before I took the test for Staff I didn't bother with the technical stuff and concentrated on the military rules section -- turns out I did better on that section than the technical. Anyway I had gone from Senior Airman to Sgt to SSGT in less than a month. Wore SGT stripes for just a few weeks. Sewed on SSGT stripes then became a civilian a month later. I have an older brother the served in the USAF in Viet Nam and another brother that served in Viet Nam in the Corps and was injured ending his tour -- he's OK today. During my 4 years in the USAF I only got to fire the M-16 one day in basic during qualification. I think it was 100 rounds in total (20 sighters/80 qual). The only other weapon I used was the 38 I qualified with every year. Of course, I did work on nuke loaded bombers on many occasions and I guess that qualifies as the really big stick! Brian |
