SgtMaj of the Army is an E-10?!? Holy smokes!!

My Dad retired from the Army in 1965 as a Sergeant Major (E-9), right after he got back from Vietnam. He was officially the "Division Sergeant Major", of the 1st Infantry Division, in Vietnam. I think these days he would have been a "Command SgtMaj". There was no SgtMaj of the Army, then.

When I was in the Corps ('68 to '74), I made rank quickly, due to my MOS (2831 radio relay). The Corps wanted us to be NCO's because we would get stuck in a platoon or company of Grunts, and they wouldn't be real cooperative unless you outranked them.

When I left active duty, I went back to S.E.A. as a contractor supporting comm links used by the Air Force. I was working with a lot of guys who had retired from the Air Force as E-5's. These were guys in their 40's who had not gotten any higher than E-5 in over 20 years. I'd been promoted to E-5 in about a year and half, at the ripe old age of 19. I was continuously ribbing them about it.

E-10's have been around for years. They have them in all branches of the military.

My brother and I both were Army in the late 60's, I was a Field Radio Op (PRC-25)and brother was a Combat Medic and we both made E-5 in 18 months...had to get a time-in-grade waiver going from E-4.

2008 Pay Scale

I only post this in follow up to the
question about the E-10s in the
enlised rank. There are no E-10s
listed on this scale, but there is
a notation, since there are only
four of them which would be eligible -
