Smile Army, Marines, USAF or Navy?

I'm going to be finished with school in about 12-18 months and was wondering what branch to go in as an officer?

That is a really open ended question. What do you want to do or see yourself doing in the military?

The only person that can answer that question is you. It is about what you want to do and what you like. Personally I like being on a ship at sea. It puts a huge strain on the family though because we are gone a lot (usually at least 1 week a month). The question that has to be asked is what are you looking to get out of your military experience?

Well that depends on what you want to do or what you are good at or like. Computers, intelligence, supply, Administration, Ground Pounding, Flying, and the list can go on forever. I know each have an advantage. Most will agree the Air Force is the way to go for a cushy, easy job. They get nice duty stations, living quarters.

If you like the dirt, the Marines is the only way to go.

I will pick an angle for you....

If you want to deploy all the time and have boots on the ground and get shot at - Join the Army or Marines.

If you want to fly above the enemy and drop bombs or transport personnel - Join the Airforce (unless your a SP - then you might get boots on the ground too)

If you want to deploy a lot out to sea and be gone frequently but fight your battles primarly out in the ocean, join the Navy (exceptions are also Electronic Warfare people and Special Operations Jobs as well - they get boots on the ground too)

Just food for thought.

There are many people in the Navy (other than EW and SpecOps) with boots on ground. Seabee's for example and the more than 7000 individual augmentees we have in combat zones. And with a little less that 100 aircraft on a carrier there is plenty of opportunity to fly. Yes, the Navy's primary mission is sea combat and maintaining shipping lanes but with very few countries having a Navy close to the strength of ours we are able to do many other missions as well.
