Not true. At one point, 1200 USCG crew were in Iraq, and remain there (and other foreign ports) today. Of course, it is true that you are less likely to go to Iraq via the CG than, for example, the Army. Difference in missions.

Hey guys,

Former AF guy here. Seen this thread and just thought I would chime in. For all of you that served..."Thanks" and for all of you that support our troops, no matter what happens..."thanks."

I will agree with some of the previous comments. I was Air Force and I was in a technical field. But I was also a SF (Security Forces) backup. So I kind of got the best of both worlds. There are some crazy SFs out there.

Yes, the Navy's primary mission is sea combat and maintaining shipping lanes but with very few countries having a Navy close to the strength of ours we are able to do many other missions as well.
Sorry, I should clarify - Boots on the ground = shoot and/or get shot at

Not sitting in Kuwait or on a base all the time.

Unless your stationed on a navy cutter. =)

Coast Guard has a 92% reenlistment percentage that speaks hugely to how well your treated. Remember the CG doesn't take everyone. I have not talked to a Coastie that did not love everyminute they were in.

I leave tuesday for bootcamp for the CG.

My Cutter went to REFTRA in San Diego in 1991 and we heard alot of that from the Squid shipriders.

At that time the average score for a Navy ship coming out of REFTRA (Refresher Training) was in the low to mid 70% range and Cutters were averaging in the high 80% range. My Cutter left San Diego with a 97% and the guys that had been telling us that we weren't real sailors wanted to sail back to our homeport with us to observe how we trained.

It was smooth sailing for about the first 8 hours then we got into a mild 20-30' swell, the Navy guys averaged about 20 years of seatime each but the problem was they were mostly carrier sailors (my Cutter was 213', carriers average 1100'). One aviation Boatswain said my cutter rode worse on a daily basis than a carrier riding out a typhoon.

Those old salts puked and whined like a bunch of midshipmen until we made it into harbor, I have never seen a Senior Chief so glad to be back on dry land.

you are asking a pretty broad question. give us something to work with.

what are your interests, and hobbies? do you have a family? how old are you? do you want to travel, or stay close to home? do you think you want to do this for 20 years, or just one tour?

do you want to do something aviation related, specops related, or technology related?

tell us a little more about yourself. you may find in writing this that you already know what you'd like to do and may already have narrowed things down to two branches, e.g. USMC vs. Army, or Navy vs. CG, etc.
