My brother was a Marine, I went in the Army, my dad retired from the Air Force, and my cousin retired from the navy, and on and on I could list out almost 100 of my relatives that were in one branch or another. we all give each other crap, just out of fun. Me personally i was airborne and a Ranger, so when the marines talk crap i laugh at them. Marines are a special breed i will give them that, but they are not better than anyone else I've seen ate up marines just like any other service. Having been in the Army, its easy to get under their skin, just ask them when the Navy is gonna let them fight the next war, and if their "mommy" will drop them off there. Or explain that the Army and Navy, came first, our left overs became the Marine Corps.

I hesitate to enter this thread as I never served. But I came very close twice.
I have a Marine story you might find interesting but first, an explanation as to why I never served. I was in college when the draft was in effect. A Marine recruiter came to school and I signed up. They had a program back then whereby the Marines would pay for your schooling. Each summer you would go for training. When you graduated you finished up your training and were commissioned a 2nd Lt, the lowest of the low. I signed up, did everything I was supposed to do then awaited orders. I never heard a word. Four years later as I was about to graduate another Marine recruiter came to campus and I told him the story. He said; "Was that Major XYZ?" and I said yes. He said that guy was a total screw up. The second time was also during the draft. I was 4 years into a 5 year college program when I got my draft notice. I didn't object to serving but wanted to finish school. They turned my request down. The woman who ran the draft board said that they wouldn't jerk me out of school once it started. School started on a Monday and I got my draft notice Wednesday. When I did graduate, in science, it was the year of Sputnik. Suddenly science became more critical than ground pounding and I went to grad school with a deferment. Now to my story. One always hears "once a Marine always a Marine" and also about the loyalty of Marines to each other. A high school friend's brother was a Marine fighter Pilot. About three years ago he was dying of cancer. Every single member of his flight crew, who were scattered all over the country got together to visit him. They marched into his house with an American Flag. Asked the family what they needed, money? whatever? they were there for him. One had become a heart surgeon and even though he lived a thousand miles away, he followed the medical procedures every day until Jerry finally passed away. That kind of loyalty can only come from a Band of Brothers who have been through the fire together. |

I was in my local pub the other day, and saw Marine in Dress Uniform, slammin a beer. Is that a no-no, too?

Dress is alright. Going out in camo is the big no-no for Marines. Last time I was at my local gun shop, recruiter was there buying an AK47 in his dress blues.
I was stationed in Savannah and every year at the Marine Corps ball you would see hundreds of Marines getting sh*t-faced out at the bars, all in full dress.

Naw. It is a minimal gesture that most any person SHOULD consider doing.
Also, I lost my neighbor boy(Marine). He was a Marine Corps sniper, and was killed by an enemy rooftop sniper in Haditha, Iraq. My high school buddy just lost his son, a Ranger, in Iraq. The uniform brings a little deeper sentiment out in me than it does most people. People need to look at the sacrifices being made and ask themselves what they are doing to support our boys. It doesn't take much to show some appreciation.
