I only see the inter service rivalry when in the USA.

Get into a scuffle in some forgien country, and suddenly the branches are one and the same.

In Spain in 85, the marines and sailors got in a fight in a Bar. Owner was going to kick us all out, so the fight stopped. A couple hours later a local sucker punched a Sailor. The first one to the sailors defense was the Marine he had been fighting earlier.

That said, my best friend is a Marine, ret. He is the Athletic director at Paris Island, until this Friday when he retires from Civil service.

Just remember, Marine = Department of the Navy Thats what their Pay checks said back before direct deposit

All Marines are taught about our long standing traditions and history while going through boot camp. We are taught to have pride in ourselves and our Corps. We are taught to honor those who came before us. I will freely admit we are slightly different.

We feel we are better because quite simply we are. It starts with our training. We go through 13 weeks of training that others were not willing to endure. We are a fighting force, and that is first and foremost what we do. We also have secondary MOS's. Mine was 1833 - AAV Crewman. I was and always will be first a Rifleman, and second a nasty lazy Tracker to all who served in Combat Arms MOS though.

There is nothing really wrong with the Army, Navy Air Force, or heck even the Coasties. We all felt an obligation to serve. We all volunteered. That in and of itself makes us worht more in any Vet's eyes than the rest of society who just wants it but won't fight for it.

If you watch carefully as you are out and about on the town you will notice something Marines do that no other branch does. We recognize and acknowledge each other anywhere we go. Trademark "Semper Fi" or similar. We go out of our way to help one another. Years after we EAS'ed. We are truly a brotherhood with sisters included. We don't do our time and forget about it.

I think this might be about as good an explanation as I could give without you actually having been there. Hope this helped, and carry on.

This is very true. I was planning on joining the military after my undergrad and wanted to get a mental health MOS but the Marines don't have any, it's pretty much infantry or mechanic. (yes I know there are others just not many) I wanted to join the Marines because they have always had a reputation of being the "A$$ kickers" and I wanted the best basic combat training.

But from what I understand it's not just the Mariens that look down on all others, but that all branches are in competiton with eachother. Sometimes you can see different branches buddy up, but when there are bar brawls near bases it's typicially because two different branches got into. I also understand it's more of an affectionate jabbing than it is a real hostility. Everyone is thankful for the Marines because of thier ground infantry capabilities, everyone is thankfull for the Navy because thier ability to provide air support in a place where no US air base is available along with all those missles they can use as support not to mention thier medics that travel with Marines. Everyone is thankful for the Army because they are a do it all branch, infantry, medics, engineers, mechanics the list goes on. And for the Airforce, even if any brach has thier own airsupport they regularlly use, no one can convince me that when a "fly boy" softens or eliminates the enemy for ground troops that they are dissapointed to see them.

Most of our flight line guys are working on helicopters that are over twice their age. Do a look up on the CH-46 airframe. It's just now starting to get phased out for the V-22 and you can bet that the Reserves are going to be using them for a long time to come. Do a look up on the EA-6B Prowler airframe. Vietnam area aircraft again.

Heck ya'll have B-52s. Something about the sons of the guys that originally flew the original airframes are flying the same jets now LOL.

I was just ribbin ya mostly. We have two Corpsman assigned to our unit and even though I've never had to use them it's reassuring to know they are there even when we are simply doing the O-course or something like that.

Usually because the Marines, Army, and Navy forget that the USAF gets most of their battlefield intel for them.

I am now stationed at Offutt AFB and I have seen some of the best battlefield intel I have ever heard.

If our Recon planes don't fly, the wrong people die.

When they do fly... Usually a B1 bomber takes of right after it.

Just in the last 60 days we prevented an ambush on the Marines, British choppers, Army convoys, and many many others.

We are a team. Just like any team there is always that look of someone that doesn't pull their weight. Just because I carry a tool box instead of a rifle doesn't mean my job is any less than yours.

Remember me the next time you get an air drop of supplies.

Remember the chubby supply girl cutting through the red tape to get me my parts so the Recon bird can get off the ground.

Remember the Arabic translator translating the intel she gets in the recon plane.

Remember that the next time you think we don't pull our weight.

Walk a mile in my shoes and I will walk a mile in yours.

I think that it is because, as one of our first ladies once said (paraphrasing now): Marines have the cleanest uniforms, the dirtiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any of the uniformed services. God bless the United States Marines!

When I looked into the service, based on three uncles having been "leathernecks", I initially considered the Corps. But when I dug deep, although the Esprit de Corps clearly went to the, well, Corps, the available education and training options, the simple variety, went overwhelmingly to the Army.

Face it, for the overwhelming part, Marines are warriors/combat troops. The other services have their warrior/combat components, but also have all of the other service components. The Marines are focused on combat. Nothing wrong with that--tip of the spear and all. We need that.

But there is a lot more to warfighting than just actual boots-on-the-ground combat.

So the Marines believe that, on average, they are the toughest of the bunch. Hell, on average that's probably true (I know a lot of Army clerks, etc. who would get their ass beat pretty badly by the average junior-highschool football player). But I also would put most of the Special Forces operators that I know up against the average Marine pretty much any day, with odds...
