NC National Guard Soldier Receives Silver Star

Weldon — A North Carolina National Guard soldier has received the Silver Star for saving four men from injury or death in Iraq in December 2006.
Chief Warrant Officer four James B. Herring of Roanoke Rapids received the honor on Saturday during a ceremony at Halifax Community College. He is an Operations Warrant Officer with B Co., 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group.
The citation mentions Herring's heroism and bravery under fire in helping the combined forces from the United States and Iraq. The attack occurred near Baqubah on Dec. 23, 2006.
Herring is the second North Carolina National Guard Soldier since World War II to earn the Silver Star, one of the nation's highest awards for valor in the Army, and second only to the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross.
