Leave question ( military )
for my military guys...
I have asked 2 soldiers in my chain in command and they dont know.. ( my sqaud leader and my plt sgt ) i could go higher.. but it seems like a dumb question to go that high i pcs from korea to ft carson in april but i want to go home ( phx, az ) on leave and pick up my new jeep and drive it to colorado ( ft carson )... is this possible.. would the military fly me home ( since its a pcs and not leave ) and them let me drive up to ft carson.. this would be my first REAL pcs... last one was from AIT to korea.. so didnt do a car or anything... any pointers would help... thx CPL Mason

Ask them for leave in conjunction with orders. Buy a plane ticket home and keep the receipt for it and all receipts for fuel on the drive. Turn them in with your travel claim when you check into your new unit.

No I don't know if I remember I'll ask him next time we talk. I know he lives on post cause it saves him a ton of money and he doesn't really dislike it enough to move off. Then again he hasn't been there that long either.

I don't know how it works for the Army, but for the Air Force it works as so. When I went to Okinawa they paid for me to go from Nellis AFB (Las Vegas) to San Deigo. But I acutally drove from Vegas to Ohio...then flew from Ohio to San Deigo. I just had to pay everything past the $170 or so I think out of pocket.

First and foremost, the governing guidance for your question is found in the JFTR (you can google it and get a PDF copy). It is common that the personnel/disbursing folks have minimal knowledge of these things, even when they claim to do so. That said, I've done this a few times, particularly with PCS from OCONUS to CONUS.
What you're looking at is referred to as circuitous travel. You will be reimbursed for up to the limit of the constructive cost (words straight out of JFTR) of the travel to get you from your old to your new duty station. They'll probably get you as far as the port of debarkation (LAX or Sea-Tac coming back from Asia), then you take care of the rest. The difference (cost of LAX/Sea-Tac to Ft. Carson) will be reimbursed to you when you liquidate your final travel claim. In a nutshell, work it out with your travel/personnel folks in advance as far as your desires. You may wind up burning some leave, mainly due to travel/proceed days provided being less than what it takes for your full travel (flight, driving, etc). Be prepared to buy your plane ticket from the west coast to your house. I've done this each time I've returned from overseas. You will likely not be reimbursed for any travel costs between your home and Ft Carson (keep receipts anyways). You will be reimbursed for some portion (or all) of the plane ticket from the port of debarkation to your home; again, keep receipts. Plan to be flexible with your connecting flight from the port of debarkation (i.e spend a night in Seattle or Los Angeles before flying home). If you are flying home on the Patriot Express, standby for the flight to not even be close to the scheduled times. If you fly commercial from Korea, you're more likely keep your time schedule. Regardless of how you do it, plan for a minimum of 12-18 hours between connecting flights (this is the voice of personal experience). Feel free to PM with any more questions. -Navy LCDR |
