What is the rules of the state you live in. Kentucky it is legal to have a pistol in your vehical but not loaded and in the glove box, but with a CCDW it can be loaded and any where in the car or on your person. When I get to the gate I usualy have it in the center console. Just be honest at the gate and you will be fine.

You need to recheck your facts, a non ccdw holder can have a loaded firearm in their vehicle as long as it is not concealed. ByKRS definitions, a firearm in the glovebox is not considered concealed, however if you have a console between the seats, that is considered to be concealed. I generally keep mine in plain sight on the passengers seat, have been stopped with it there as well as gone through roadblocks, just make sure it is in plain sight or in the glovebox in Ky.

KRS 527.20.8
A firearm or other deadly weapon shall not be deemed concealed on or about the person if it is located in a glove compartment, regularly installed in a motor vehicle by its manufacturer, regardless of whether said compartment is locked, unlocked, or
does not have a locking mechanism. No person or organization, public or private, shall prohibit a person from keeping a firearm or ammunition, or both, or other deadly weapon in a glove compartment of a vehicle in accordance with the provisions of this subsection. Any attempt by a person or organization, public or private, to violate the provisions of this subsection may be the subject of an action for appropriate relief or for damages in a Circuit Court or District Court of competent jurisdiction.

Nothing in the law that it has to be unloaded...

Nope, not at all. We are talking AF bases here with bored cops and lots of ammo.

Dude, just don't take it with you that day. That will keep you in the clear.

Most gate gaurds and SPs are fairly ignorant of guns that they aren't issued (contrary to what some of them might claim) and will flip at the mention of a gun. If you go to the gate and say "hey, I have an unloaded pistol in my trunk, is that going to be a problem?", they aren't going to sick the dog on you and pull you out of the car to taste an asphalt sandwich; they may make you sit there while they radio for someone to come and make an issue of it, and generally hassle you about it, maybe taking an extra hour out of your day that you could have spent elswhere. Just avoid the whole debacle and leave it at home.

Now, can we stop acting like AF MPs are some kind of hard-nosed tough guys, and something to be feared? You are going to give this guy the impression that the Air Force is something that it's not. Besides, I am pretty sure the gate gaurds are civilians, like Wackenhut or something (armed mall security), and basically the only way he would have a problem with MPs (or SPs or whatever they are called) is if he gets pulled over for speeding.

Don't do it. It's not worth it. If you absolutely positively have too, leave them seperated in the trunk.

Every time I've went though Fayettville the gate guards were civilians.

The Marine Corps still uses Marines to guard our bases over here in the Lejeune area.

I have been station on several Navy bases. Only one allowed you to bring personal weapons on base. None allowed CCW.

Lakehurst NJ did allow weapons, we even hunted pheasent on base and deer. I lived in Base housing and could have my weapons including handguns. However they had to be un loaded out side of my housing, until I was off base. Long guns could only be loaded in the Hunting areas.

That was the one and only time I ever lived in Base housing.

The policy does up set me. As I am retired and live 180 miles from the nearest base. I pass a base twice a month, in Meridian Miss, but never can stop for the cheap smokes and boose at the exchange because there is always a handgun in my truck or car.
