Well, a few bucks is a few bucks!
Just saw on one of the Air Force forums where those who were in in military and had near their 20 years in, that they have some plan arranged to bring those guys into the VA Comp sytem. Those guys were really cheated. By that I mean, a vet who had maybe 2 -4 years to go for retire- ment. The military service releases them on disability, thus they are denied the attempt to complete the 20. Now, a passed proposal is for the vet to get 2 1/2 percent for every year served as a total compensation monthly of their base pay when released from active duty. This new comp will not fall into this VA comp system though. At least for now. Ed |

a6fan, as I said above, this is a new plan.
Nothing was mentioned about tossing them out with nothing. I am aware that when someone is released from the military on a medical that they are offered a medical discharge after being rated for anything disabling from 30% and above. This is called a disibility pension, from the former service members service group, Army, Air Force, etc. I am also aware that these same veterans, who are discharged may go to the DVA and apply for compensation for their service connected condition(s). Before the DVA will award the compensation, the veteran must pay back any and all monies that the former military group has paid them. As now exists, the option is a 'pension'. The newer plan, which is in the running, will actually be for compensation and not be called a pension. A pension is taxable, the compensation is not. The comp being the more perferable. I am also assuming that this newer ploan will relieve the military groups from being charged from their funds (DOD) and will evidently be absorded by the DVA. As far as those who stay in the military, with a disability, have 18.5 years in Sam and are allowed to stay and get their 20, thats great! Then they can still go to the DVA and apply for compensation for the service connected disabling condition(s) when they retire. I do not know what I said that lead to you believe that I was leaving anyone out. I am only the messenger. Ed Quote:

I have a buddy who retired from the USPS about 5 years ago. VN vet. I had to drag him down to the VA office to get him to apply for his benefits. He now gets $921 a month, 60%, for Agent Orange, PTSD, and wounds suffered. He now realizes he was a complete and total fool for not applying much earlier. |
