I was in from OCT 95- OCT 99 as a 1WO51 weather observer. If I had stayed in for another enlistment I could have gone to forecasting school and become a 1WO51A with some decent career potnetial in the civilian weather career field. Instead I got out after my 4 and went to College where I earned a degree in Geography, a degree which has no career potential.
I enlisted at 21 and once finished with tech school I spent 3 years and 3 months at HILL AFB UT. Minus a 4 month TDY to Saudi Arabia but that was between the Iraq wars and the TDY was no real problem at all. Hill AFB was a good assingment and I still miss the Rocky Mountain region especially Northeast Utah, Southwest Wyoming and Southern Central Idaho. I would never have gotten a chance to live out there had I not enlisted. Choose an AF career field that interests you, but try to get soemting where the training you recieve has a direct benefit in landing civilain job, if possible. Air Force needs will come first and when you try to enlist there will always be some job that is in great demand, or that a recruiter will try to steer your towards. Ask to see a list of what is avaliable at the time of your pending enlistment and choose a career field form that list. Also sign a contract at MEPS (Military Entrancing & Processing Station) that guarantees your entry into the career field you want. In all, my time had its ups and downs but much more of the former. I would do it all over again if I was 21 again.

Question service in the Air Force
Quote:
I joined the Air Force in Mid 1956 after finishing a Four Tour in the Navy. In that Period of time the Draft was still in place and Normally You took whatever assignment you recieved after Graduating from Tech School. With the all Volunteer Force they have now I dont know how they make assinments to new Volunteers however You will need to find out what career Fields are available which will be MANY then pick out Three that You want, then check with a Recruiter for a necessary test to see If You qualify and while You are at it ask about volunteering for an overseas assignment and how that is worked. However I believe You will probably have to take whatever base assignment You are given You after Tech School Training. On Reinlistment Four Years later You would be able to request an overseas assignment. America has the best armed services in the World, they vare all winners! Good Luck HRC |

I made 4 active duty Years in USAF, and after Being discharged I joined the Air National Guard and crewed F104 Aircraft, and F102 after a change of Aircraft took place and served a Total of over 27 Years in the ANG as an Air Technician and Retired with 35 Years service. I have no regrets about making the AF a Career, if I had it to do over again I would join the AF at the beginning. America has the best armed services in the World, they are all winners!
