M198 155mm Towed Howitzer

The M198 howitzer weighs 15,760 pounds and is 35.75 feet
long in firing configuration. The cannon itself has 45 degrees
of lateral traverse and can be elevated between 72 and
5 degrees. The normal ground transport for the M198 is the
M939 6x6 5-ton truck and the cannon itself requires a crew
of 11.

It's all fun and games until the 1KMsq is saturated by this guy..

http://tech.military.com/equipment/v...et-system.html

Actually, I was fortunate enough to witness both sides of a South Korean 100 gun shoot. Lined up hub to hub by Battery.. the concussion rocked our HUMMV pretty hard near the fire line (we were sleeping at the time), and the concussion from the impact of the second shot knocked 6 of us right on our asses from 5KM away, even if we did have to let the KATUSA call the mission ... but what an awesome sight.. 100rnds of 155mm impacting in less than 1.5KMsq ..

I had a chance to work a M198 gun line with some Marines and it was pretty f'n impressive. You can actually see the 155 shell leaving the gun, its like watching death leave and slowly fade away into the blue sky to find its target thousands of yards away. Even with hearing protection I believe I lost some hearing but it was worth it!

I was with 11th Marines in the early 90's. Watching a massive night shoot like the one in the video is something else. Being on the receiving end of this would be terrifying. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eYR-H4...eature=related

My battery was supporting an LAV unit one night, from a distance we we could see the exchange of fire, red and green tracers, between the LAVs and the Iraqis. After we started firing the 198s the Iraqis thought they were being attacked from the air and we watched as their tracers went up. They were shooting at nothing. We all laughed as we finished our 10 round mission and got the hell out of there. They had been so used to being bombed by aircraft I guess they didn't expect an artillery unit to be near the border shooting at them. We were told that we were trying to provoke the Iraqis into firing their arty or turn on their counter battery radar in order for our planes to take them out. Nothing like being bait.
