Marine Corps JAG

I've heard that you are a Marine first and attorney second in the JAG program. In reality, how likely is it that they would send a JAG into Iraq/Afghanistan with a machine gun to go kill terrorists as opposed to just doing law stuff?

God love her... I think this thread is drifting off topic and I'm not sure I really mind that much. LOL

(BTW anybody with insight into the original question please chime in).

Very unlikely that would ever happen. If they do pull lawyers to go serve with line units you can bet the **** has most definatly hit the fan and we have some major problems.

Even us wingers will rarely see anything bigger than a security detail guarding a checkpoint or the perimeter of an airbase or something like that.

If it's something you are looking at doing just do and rest assured any kind of "depolyment" you MIGHT see (if you see any at all) will be limited to doing legal work at places like Al Asad airbase or something like that.

Legal officers routinely work in the field with the Marine Corps especially. They interview participants in major gunfights and advise on legality issues concerning orders and tactics. They might not be feeding the belts on an M240, but they certainly know how and will if they need to.

In the first few weeks of Iraq, there was some kind of ambush on HMMV's and a Lt. Colonel, a lawyer and career Marine officer, was injured along with two LCpl types. The interview with them was on FOX news.

They work with MP's and NCIS on cases before they ever come to the attention of JAG.

I don't understand this statement. "They" are the JAG officers?

No they are not. JAG's are lawyers within the Marine Corps and the Navy and they both share offices and are concerned with all the respective legal cases, particularly at the General Court Martial level, which means a General Officer of at least 2 star will be involved.

In the Marine Corps, every single officer and enlisted man wearing that uniform goes to Infantry school and they are all fully trained on infantry weapons. Everything the USMC does is in support of boots on the ground, so they all know at least the basics. That includes JAG officers... we used to call them JAG-Offs for short.

An interesting case is going on in Alaska right now, concerning Army Sniper's and classified tactics in Iraq. Four of them from 501st PIR, 4th Brig, 25th ID are being tried in connection with several deaths in Iraq in which Snipers placed det cord, fuses and magazines on the ground for insurgents to pick and they took them out. One of them is among the Army's top shooters and the recipient of several commendations related to sniping and he is highly decorated. The Army won't acknowledge such a program and the Marine Corps JAG might be getting involved next week. It sucks what they are doing to them for doing their job. It's a war not a basketball game.
