Remember Veterans Day - November 11th
I was a small boy, good parents in the home
and good teachers in the school taught me the significance of the national holiday observed on Nov. 11. At onetime, it was known as Armistice Day, and it commemorated the cessation of hostilities between the Allies and Germany and the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, 1918. That solemn act ended World War I and brought exuberant rejoicing all across this land, for it meant that family members, friends and neighbors were soon to come home from battlefields in Europe. Then, 53 years ago, on June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a distinguished and decorated veteran of World War II, in the second year of his first term in office, signed a bill enacted by Congress that made a remarkable change in the scope of this national holiday. By that significant act, Nov. 11 was designated as Veterans Day. More than a day of leisure, this national holiday was set apart as a day for American citizens to pause, remember and recognize the special contribution of veterans of all wars who, in times of crises, have served their country admirably and with distinction. We are a nation of free people. We have rights and privileges few people in the world enjoy. Lest we forget, from Bunker Hill to Baghdad, veterans were, and are, the vanguard of our freedom. Most of them did not choose to be professional soldiers. Instead, they were ordinary citizens who were family members, neighbors and friends who responded when duty to their country called. By putting their lives on the line in times of great crises, these brave men and women protected, preserved and perpetuated the freedom we cherish but sometimes take for granted. You can make Veterans Day special. If you really appreciate the freedom you enjoy, pause for a moment before Old Glory. Then, thank a veteran for his or her contribution to the protection of our flag and our freedom. Thanx to all who have served, those who did not return, and especially to those whom are in service to our country today. Ed |

Thank you for remembering us, but remember those who gave the most for us.
