Every night, at 2100... Lackland AFB

OK, I'm working at a job site just outside Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Every night, at exactly 2100 I hear them play Taps over the PA system. I've never heard this before at any of the bases I've been at. Anybody know why?

All three tech school bases I've been to do that. Lackland, Keesler and Chanute. It marks the end of the duty day.

Yep, everynight we had to be in bed by the time Taps played in basic training I don't even remember hearing it in Tech School.

I guess it different for Army. COB (close of business) or end of duty day is marked by the final Revele(sp?) and the post flag coming down. Still, 2100 is a bit late to end the day, even by Army standards.

Why use Taps anyways? I thought that was reserved for funerals and the "Final roll call".

Hmmmm, I also still have mixed feelings after going through basic there.....
The years go by and I tend to only remember the "better" things.

Been a long time since my service days, but if I am not mistaken, Revele was played in the morning, I believe at 0600 hrs and final Revele was at 1800hrs, then Taps at 2300hrs. 2300 was also known as "lights out".

Am I forgetting??

That sounds a little more aacurate to the Army, but few posts these days play Taps for lights out. Maybe Lackland does it for the trainees? I am closer to the trainee side, at Medina Base road.
