Not instigating. I am not familiar with the process, and the way I interpreted what you guys were talking about is that anyone can just mail-order a medal. I was shocked, but am glad that that isn't the case.

If you aren't a vet you have no business in this thread.

I get my replacements from either Super Trooper or the PX if I happen to be close to an installation and think of it.

I keep one set wrapped in plastic so that it is good forever.

Plus I just added 3 more to my rack so I needed to change it anyways.

i buy ribbons at the NEX. i hear ultrathin is good though. they look alot better and you dont have to worry about them falling off.

medals i have never been in a situation where i had to get so dressed up it called for medals. but i would buy them at the NEX also.

anyone see the article about the US Military getting there medals from overseas?

what are some other options??
You can hit the National Personnel Records Center website and find out how to apply for medals you're entitled to. Once they verify the entitlement, they will send you the medals for free. (I have a Korea Defense Service Medal on the way)

If you want to go the pay route, there are many sites on the web you can find that will be happy to sell you what you need.

Good luck!!

I'm new here and retired AF. So if I'm repeating something that's already been said, please disregard... But, in case it hasn't already been mentioned...

If you were ever stationed in Korea; or spent 30 consecutive or 60 non consecutive days in Korea, you qualify for the newly created "Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM)". If you have a relative who served in the Korean war, you can obtain the decoration on their behalf. All you have to do is contact the National Personnel Records Center (through their website) to find out how to apply. I sent a letter off a few weeks ago, and I've already received a response. My medal is on the way!

Some folks say; my career is over, why bother? I say, if you've earned it, get it, and wear it proudly!

Hope this is helpful to someone.

4.5 years in 3 tours is enough remembering of Korea for me!

I didn't read the entire thread, but if you're retired, Ultrathin and a couple others should be good. Problem you run into if you're active duty is that with the military handing them out like candy nowadays, just about the time you spend $40 for the perfect 1-piece rack, you get another damned medal. Probably something stupid like the National Defense Service Medal, but it's enough to screw up the whole array!

Personally, I just pick 'em up at the PX/Clothing sales. They'll have to get replaced and reshuffled anyway and I've worn my service dress probably 10 times in nearly 7 years.
