I'm not a VFW member. Never served in a war zone when I was in.

But I have several friends that are and my daughters rifle club is partially sponsored by a VFW post.

Lots of younger guys are joining the posts now, yes you will be sourounded by some older guys, but they are the older guys that have kept this country free for several generations. Guys that have been through combat, come home, and restarted their lives. They are a great resource, many are sucessful businessman or policticians or other influencial people in the community.

The VFW here is basically run by the Korean War vets. The Vietnam vets are pretty scarce and the new vets are almost non-existent. I have been a member for a couple years but have been so busy that I keep forgetting the meetings. I recently put them on Outlook Calendar so I can remember.

I'll post again after a meeting or two.

great tombo, I wished more younger guys like you would join veterans organizations. You may also want to consider the American Legion as well.

Thumbs up Welcome Tombo...

so nice to hear that you are considering the VFW -

http://www.vfw.org/

I am a life member of all three major veterans service
organizations: VFW, American Legion and DAV.

Without you youngbloods to carry on, these fine
organizations will just drift off into the sunset.

Might add that my grand nephew just came back from
the sand box. I surprised him one afternoon, even though
he was at that time, a little shy of being of legal age, 21,
but we had a great time talking trash and bending our elbows
at the local VFW post. I signed him up before we left and
it was a lifetime membership, paid for by me just to show my
deepest gratitude for his service to our/his country. That
really made a favorable impression upon him.

He is somewhat gungho and is now doing another tour in
the sand box at present.

Vets are vets, regardless of the age or age difference.

At present, the lifetime membership is the best buy. Once
you are paid up, no more dues. The dues are going to jump
the first of the year, not saying this in order to push you, but
for sure, its a good investment. Besides, we sure would like to
have you!

While this is true I was turned off from joining the VFW as I was told I had to be a vet that was in a war not a vet during a war. Turned me off to the VFW 100%.

There's a VFW where I use to live up north in Iowa. They threw the rule book down the toilet. It's self supporting with a bar that's open six days a week. They also have weekend breakfast and BBQ's. All Americans are welcome. You can even rent space for private party's. They know how to do it right.

Down here in Texas I know of three VFW's. Except for one that let's the state troopers use it for handing out drivers licenses they stand empty except for one day a month when people get together and pick their noses or whatever.

I had some mighty good times in the VFW up north. All I do at the VFW down here is renew my license.

Maybe it's time to change the rules.

Thumbs down Left the Army in...

...1974...one of my neighbors got me to go with him to the local VFW in the Riverdale section of the Bronx...the HMFIC made his sales pitch about how the chapter was free of nig$#rs and sp@cs..no non-whites in the chapter...I took a drink from his Ron Rico rum bottle, and poured it on his bald ass racist head and told him to kiss my ass...I wasn't interested in joining a group of alcoholic racists who thought and believed that the only true veteran was a white veteran...that's my experience with that tribe.
