Marines and strangers rush to aid of victimized veteran
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a good news update on a home ransacked and spray painted by a pair of teen burglars in northwest Houston. While the burglars are now in custody, community members and Marines stepped in to help the homeowner -- a 93-year-old World War II veteran.
The Marines quickly marched into the defaced home of WWII veteran Elbert Wood, eager to help.
"It's important that he knows we're here for him and that we're always his brothers," Major Roberto Rodriguez said.
The presence of these local Marines is just one example of the outpouring of support for Wood since we first reported the burglary and vandalism of his home on Monday. Two teens, ages 13 and 16, were arrested for allegedly committing the crime.
"My feelings about them are not anger so much as just wondering why they would do something like that," Wood said.
Since then, calls came in from around the country, as former Marines and strangers offered to paint the graffiti-laden walls or replace the damaged household items. Gallery Furniture dropped off a living room set.
Wood's daughter Mary Ellen Hopperdietzel said, "I feel that a fuss is made because he is a World War II veteran. But the fact of it is, this is devastating no matter who it happens to."
The Wood family says it's still trying to comprehend all the support shown their father, who also just lost his wife last month. For today, it's obvious the presence of fellow Marines brought a smile to his face, as he coaxed the younger Marines into an impromptu singing of the Marine Corps hymn.
Some contractors and builders also stopped by to assess the situation. They will return to complete the cleanup and repairs.

excellent read
that was an excellent read! i love the part about him coaxing them into an impromptu the Marine Corps hymn!
my WWII uncle's, RIP, funeral honored by the Marine Corps honor guard was just stellar to say the least! that white hearst passing slowly through that gauntlet of white service hats and white gloves slowly saluting is bringing tears to my eyes now! the Marines take care of their own!
several years prior, his older brother's US Army funeral did not come close to this. they had two maybe or 3 honor guards and they had a jambox w/a CD to play a recording of Taps. it hit the first note and then never another sound out of it! they messed with it some, but just gave up!
From THAT US Army CF [hopefully they have improved today], i found me a Bud (an Army bugler) that is 'on call' to blow taps, if and when i may need it for my father (Army Air Corps/USAF). i also vowed to render a proper salute to all my future uncle's during taps, too from that day on.
my father's oldest bro, 92, US Navy (Ret) WWII isn't in too good of health. i also thought of him reading this travesty of the youth of today!

It’s great that the Marines and community take care of the Veteran.
But what about the punks that committed the crime? Who is taking care of them? Juvenile Court where they will be given a strongly worded warning?
I have an idea for the Court. Total up the damages. Put the two punks to work (at zero pay) aiding disabled vets. After they put in enough hours, at the minimum wage, to total the damages, they are done. In addition, until the punks reach the age of 21, the Marine Veteran never has to mow his lawn, take his trash cans to the curb or weed his garden.
The Marines teach personal accountability and responsibility. Let the Court teach the same to the punks.
