Well, I retired with more than 20. I use Tricare Prime...a quarterly payment but well worth it! They payed me while I was in and now pay me to stay out! They take my precentage of disability from my retirement pay and give it to VA. VA turns around and gives that percentage of my retirement pay right back to me. But it's "Tax Free." How can you beat a deal like that, I ask you?
What my Uncle dosen't understand is I plan on living to be a hundred! Hahahaha
With my Retirement and Social Security, I might buy me an island! Maybe a new XDm 45? Throw me in that briar patch!

Here in South Louisiana (Lafayette, LA), we're working hard (many more than yours truly) to get a VA Super Clinic in place to replace the existing clinic. This is needed with the very large # of vets in this region. The existing clinic does blood tests, office visits, & some mental health offices. To get anything invoves a trip to Alexandia, LA, Shreveport, LA, New Orleans, LA or Houston, TX for everything else.

The indigent in this area get much more comprehensive treatment than vets in this region. There is a full service hospital in Lafayette, LA for the indigent.

Our hope with lots of political support is much more available services eliminating full day to multi day trips for simple treatments. The issue now is funding and staffing. I gave serious doubts about funding this with the comments from the President recently. We need this but may not get what we need.

I never thought 44 years ago sitting in the jungle in VN the vets would be so good to me now. It took me 4 years of getting through the paperwork but at 100% disabled it was worth the wait. And I got a raise this month. Good luck to everyone.

I retired in '02 with exactly 20 years in. Got a 30% rating for a chronic debilitating condition I was diagnosed with while still active duty. Wish they'd fix the concurrent receipt thing. My retirement/disability makes most of my mortgage, but I still needed a full-time job. The wife works too. The property tax abatement is the best thing my state does for me.

The segment of the population who've never served just do not understand. They think my retirement means I'm on permanent vacation.

If anyone is having issues with the VA related to medical treatment etc.

If anyone is having issues with the VA related to medical treatment etc. then let me know & I can try to help cut through some red tape.

I've witnessed veterans having issues receiving care or approval thereof and I don't like that occuring.

I filed for VA Compensation in October 2011 and, by the advice of several veteran friends as well as my VFW, I sent all the required information to the DAV to help ease the process. I was told it would take quite a while, up to 18 months, for decision and approval and was fine with that but really wanted to get into the VA about some problems I was having related to sleep, anxiety, etc. I have contacted the VA a couple of times and been "registered" but have yet to have an appointment. My claim is still in the "gathering evidence" status as it says that it "We need evidence showing that the following condition(s) existed from military service to the present time". I have tried to contact my DAV rep SEVERAL times and he is always out of the office, at training, etc. I was finally put in contact with someone at the DAV who would actually speak to me and was informed, last month, that they were waiting for me to send in the questionnaire that I gave to the DAV rep LAST FEBRUARY to show "evidence". She then told me that she would have someone look into my status and call me back.

My question is, when is enough enough? Do I need to find another rep to assist me here? I am no longer receiving letters from the VA telling me that my claim is under review and I am deathly afraid that the VA will finally drop my status and have me start over again. I am told that there should be a backpay of benefits based on the original file date but have been told that if they drop my file and I have to start over that date changes.

Does anyone have any advice? A reliable contact in the Houston area? I am still having problems sleeping and I believe that it is the root of most of my other issues. Should I go to a civilian doctor? Just looking for some advice here.
