I think most people don't mean any harm by it, they just don't know the difference and given that "soldier" has been the term for military members for hundred's of years longer than words like Marine and especially Airman it is no wonder they default to it.

It used to bother me but I realized most are trying like when they say "So you served last year?" I want to say "No I have served non-stop every year for the past 10+ years, I just happened to be deployed to Afghanistan last year" but I know what they mean.

Another thing that needs to be cleared up. There are no Ex-Marines, no Former Marines etc. The change is for life, once a Marine always a Marine. See Quote:

"A Marine is a Marine. I set that policy two weeks ago - there's no such thing as a former Marine. You're a Marine, just in a different uniform and you're in a different phase of your life. But you'll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. There's no such thing as a former Marine."

The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James F. Amos

Except maybe for those who chose to murder, rape, and just generally act like butt clowns.

Whenever I see someone refer to oneself as a former Marine I have to wonder if they were ever really in the Corps.

There is always that 10%, or I would like to think more like 5%.

When I see that and the Marine is not capitalized. I just look and say there are Marines and ones that wish they were.

Specialized soldiers? this doesn't make sense..every soldier is a specialized soldier they are specifically trained in a certain job. Just because he is called a marine or a soldier doesn't mean he is a traditional soldier that sees combat because not that many actually do. Most of the Armed forces are trained in support mos's and never see combat.

agreed!
I'm a sailor. I'm proud to be sailor. Just because my extra duty is VBSS and I carry an M4 and M9, doesn't mean I'm a "soldier". I am a sailor, but a real one, one that has done real sea time

The public just sees a service member will group us under that word "soldier" because they don't know what to call each group.

I wouldn't call a teacher a salesman.

I wouldn't call a dentist an auto mechanic.

I wouldn't call an ophthalmologist a social services worker.

I wouldn't call a Marine a soldier.

That's pretty much my answer when someone asks, "Why don't Marines want to be called soldiers?" I just say "why wouldn't you call an HVAC repairman a librarian?"
