This is a discussion on Dying Former Marine denied refund within the U.S. Military Services & Veterans forums, part of the Protect & Serve category; I'm far from a bleeding heart, but cut the old guy some slack. I guess nobody believes in extenuating circumstances?...

Here's the problem, do it once and you're screwed forever.

How can you decide for who and for what reasons you'll break the rules for? Military? LEO? How about a computer geek who spend countless hours coding life saving software and potentially saved millions of lives?

Yes, I believe people need a break sometimes - but I don't believe that rules should be broken based on your career or who you are/were.

Agreed, he was not tricked or discriminated against for any reason. I think it is crappy as hell that the airline didn't make an exception for him but some times people throw out the veteran thing when the story isn't about that. It should have been enough helping a dying men.

If AT&T charges me a cancelation fee for ending my cellphone contract early I don't claim they hate America because I'm a veteran!

The dude knew what he was buying; in the end I somehow doubt the 197 will make much difference. His cause would be much more supportable if he instead asked that his ticket fare be donated to helping a wounded warrior travel somewhere.

I'm a former marine and I feel for the guy but he knew what he was getting himself into. I love getting veteran discounts and free food from most restaurants on veterans day but I know where to draw the line and not expect to get my way all the time just because I served my country. I'm glad he still able to see his daughter and wish him the best.
