Dont psyche yourself out. Dont think about it too much. You'll live through some of the best, the worst, and most pointless, senseless, idiotic meaningless days of your life. But you'll be just like the rest of us, and in the end you'll think you had a blast. Oh, and make sure that gas mask really does fit.

Its Army basic....dont worry about it. Just keep your head up and stay motivated. Remember, fake motivation breeds real motivation.

Good luck to you.
Dang. I can't believe it has been 25 years since I went through Ft. Leonard Wood back in 1984 as a crane operator. 62 Foxtrot, if I remember correctly. It didn't matter much, though. My unit never had a crane for the six years I was enlisted. I'll always remember the bus ride from the airport in St. Louis. Arriving in the wee morning hours and getting yelled at the second we got off the bus. LOL! Good times. You'll have to let me know if they still process you in before you go to your basic training unit in some old pre-WWI shacks with no walls in the crappers. Picnic tables with hometown radio station graffiti carvings, reading your SMART book everywhere you went(or whatever it may be called now), cattle cars, $1 cabs anywhere on post...jeez...I'm feeling old. Just remember that it's all a game and it's nothing personal. Try not to think too hard into what's going on, just do what they tell you to do, how they tell you to do it and drink water all the time. Once you get thirsty, you're already dehydrated and it's too late to try and rehydrate. If you can find a few minutes at the end of the day, stretch your muscles out before you get in the rack or after you get in the rack.

well they have changed their naming, when I went through Leonard Wood OSUT training in 1989, we were 12 Bravos not 21s. With you two guys arriving 6 days apart, you may very well end up in the same basic training company, depends on how quick reception fills.
Keep your eyes and minds open and your mouths shut, try to get into the 2nd or 3rd row (squad) because the front and back ranks often draw the most attention from the drills. Be the guys that the drills don't know by name in the 2nd or 3rd week. I was there from May to August, hot as hell, you guys will be there in Winter cycles, cold as hell. And as someone else said, always drink water, your drills will probably tell you a canteen per hour. This is something that will stay with you the rest of your lives. 20 years later, I can still tell you the names of all my drill sgts from Echo Company 35th 132nd. And finally, god bless and thank you both for your service. Duty, Honor, Country
