DD 214 Online
I thought this link might be useful to some of you.
http://vetrecs.archives.gov/ You are supposed to be able to obtain your DD 214 0n line. I have not tried it since I have copies of mine and I get nervous with that kind of info on my computer. But for someone who needs it right now, and does not have it, this could be a God send.

Army, and Air Force can get theirs online.
Navy, and Marine Corps has to do it the old fashioned way... i.e. fill out the form and mail it in.

I had mine registered with my local country records when I retired. So I can always request it from them if I need a copy.

Here is my take on what I read online -
This is just a vehicle hereby a vet can file online for a copy of his record(s) such as their DD214 from the official repository of such. It cannot be down- loaded directly, there is still a paper trail. It is nice to know, however, I will go the old fashion route if I ever need a copy or replacement, reason, identity thief. Speaking of ID thief, and the post above has brought this matter up. Yes, we vets were asked or told to file our DD214s with our county registar or county clerk at the court house. That was back in the days when we needed to do so for bonus sign up for payment from the state. Here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, just two years ago, there was legislation that was passed whereby a vet could go to the court of record, normally his local court house, and ask that his military record(s) be pulled from the official record book. In it's place went a special form that was signed by the vet and the county clerk or their designated official which showed that the official record was removed at the request of the vet. Hopefully this will cut down on ID thief. All that info on a DD214 had my service number, SSN, DOB, place of birth and enough info whereby one could create my indenity and use it. I feel that it was a good piece of legislation. Not all vets are aware it however as there was no money for creating a vehicle to notify all vets. Consider yourself notified if you live in KY. Ed |
