Not Awarding Enough Medals of Honor for Iraq, Afghan Valor
I've been wondering about this too. Seems like they're only giving them to KIA's, as well.
Early on it seemed like they were handing out Bronze and Silver Stars pretty fast (at least the Army seemed to be Some Say Pentagon Not Awarding Enough Medals of Honor for Iraq, Afghan Valor - Political News - FOXNews.com

I really have to disagree with this. We've been talking about this a lot here lately. I could go on, but all thats needed for most to understand is to take a look at the Bronze Stars in Iraq. I've seen my share of sr. NCO's receive them for their leadership positions during the deployment. I've also seen guys pull men out of burning trucks and receive and ARCOM. WTF!? Handing awards out, just because we haven't seen enough is a ridiculous reason IMO. Bob Howard had three recommendations for the award in Vietnam before he was even considered. He lived through every encounter and every single one of them should have garnished him the MOH. Different wars. Different times. We don't stare straight down the barrel as much as we used to.

I can actually contribute now. lol. I'm a brand new Air Force Lt. going through initial training out here at Maxwell AFB and we had an Army Medal of Honor recipient come through and talk to us. Somebody asked him about this and he told us that it comes down to a few things.
- Are there people alive at the end of this to tell people about it. - Can they write? - Does your chain of command feel like it's worth bumping up. - Does the senior leadership feel like it's something worth awarding it for. So in his opinion it's sorta "and the stars aligned" kinda thing. It's tragic that some people that really deserve recognition don't get it but at the end of the day we don't do it for the awards. |
