More Help May Decrease Waiting Time for Weapons Permit
March 20th, 2007 @ 6:20pm Andrew Adams, KSL Newsradio The wait to get a concealed weapons permit in Utah isn't getting any shorter. It now stands at 90 to 100 days, but there may be relief ahead. Shooting ranges and gun shops know the high demand for concealed carry permits. Charles Hardy, with Gun Owners of Utah, said the demand is so high because they're accepted in 31 states and are affordable. Currently the permit costs $59. "There are states that are literally down in the $20 range, but they aren't nearly as widely accepted," Hardy said. Lt. Doug Anderson sees the trouble first-hand. "We had an average of about 1,345 permit applications per month," Lt. Anderson told KSL Newsradio. There are thousands of requests but only three people to process all the applications. The good news is that there is a new law that will allow the Bureau of Criminal Identification to assign more workers and shoot holes in that backlog. |
