I am getting ready to send out my new XD-9 Tactical to be overhauled as a "race" gun, but I am up in the air on sight choices.
When I had my XD-40 reworked, I had Dawson adjustable FO sights installed. I really like them for slow-fire at the range, but my relatively bad eyes and cross-eye dominance makes the little dots hard to align at speed and for follow-up shots. So, I've been looking for something that would provide a faster sight picture while still being accurate to distances out to 25 yards. I have a set of SureSights sitting on my desk that I was planning on installing on a different gun. I am a firm believer in the "instinctive" pointability of their design... I'm just wondering how they would work on a race gun as opposed to a carry/nightstand gun. I figured I would be better off getting a few opinions before I took the plunge. If I'm going to pay to have sights installed, I'd rather only do it once. |

After rereading all the testimonials on the SureSight website, and Googling like crazy... I'm going to go ahead and put them on my race gun. What the hell!

Are they legal, meaning will they meet the "notch & post" requirement? I know in IDPA they would not be legal. I assume this based on the fact that the Steyr setup is not legal.
Any thoughts? OS

it should be legal, it is a notch and post, but with a triangle painted on top. Of course it appears different, and some rule makers slow of wit might have a hard time dealing with that. That is why some folks don't see it as a big deal, if you look at the steel bits, it is notch and post, kinda. I mean, they are a bit weird shaped, but basically the rear does have a notch, and the front is a post the belongs in the notch in the proper 'sight picture'. The triangle painted on top makes it easier to for our brains to form the picture, so if that is an issue you could just cover or remove the yellow paint.

Miguel Enjoying my XD .45ACP Tactical. need to break in my 870, and my wife's XDSC9. I carry my XD45 ACP Tactical, in a SuperTuck from CB. Very comfortable, easy to hide, easy to draw, and easy to reholster. Looking for an HDR*, either an AR-180B, or Kel-Tec FBR. I guess I never really considered the legallity of the sights. They are just a modified notch and post after all. But, as was already mentioned, fitting the letter of the rules and passing the judge's visual inspection are two different things.
I do love my Dawson's for range work, but when I do fast fire drills I always lose the front sight and it takes me forever to reacquire it and refocus on it. Maybe I should just suck it up and put tape on my glasses or something. As a side note: How do the FO "dot" sizes compare between TruGlo FO sights and the Dawson FO sights? I know they're not adjustable, but maybe if the dots and/or notch were bigger on the TruGlos they would work better for me than the Dawsons. Last edited by Hooz; 03-13-2007 at 10:24 AM. |

What width back and what size front do you have? That is very important IMO. You can make the FO dot as big as you want (within reason) on the Dawson's. Just give me a call and I can explain more.
