Under 21 and trying to start in USPSA...

So I had my XD9 gifted to me when I bought it, but I'm still worried about the fact that I am 18 and trying to get started in USPSA. My folks are pretty indifferent about the fact that I want to shoot competitively, and, being lawyers, they've got me concerned about the "handguns under 21" laws in effect in LA. I'm trying to find other students at my college over 21 who would be interested in forming a team, but no luck so far. What exactly do I need to do to be legally safe- do I need a guardian to accompany me to a match, or sign a waiver, etc? I haven't shot a match yet and I'm concerned that the legal issues may keep me from doing so.

Depends on state law.

Here in Tx over the age of 18 you are good to go. You can own a handgun and buy one from a private party but you can't buy one from a FFL holder.

If you are military they will even allow you to acquire a CHL at the age of 18.

When you say LA do you mean Louisiana or Los Angeles??

ETA-straight from the Brady Bunch's website for Louisiana

Quote:
JUVENILE SALE
Is it illegal to sell handguns to anyone under 21 years of age? No

State law does not restrict selling handguns to juveniles under the age of 21 by unlicensed sellers. Under federal law, only federally licensed dealers are prohibited from selling or delivering handguns or ammunition for handguns to any person under the age of 21. A strong state law is needed to stop unlicensed persons from selling handguns to those under the age of 21.

Louisiana. I checked the USPSA/IPSC rules but couldn't find any definitive answers.

You will be fine going to a USPSA match by yourself there are no rules that I know of limiting adults no matter age.

And by what I've been able to find real quick on the web if you are 18 or over you are good to go to own a handgun.

You could have went to a private party and bought a handgun if you are over 18.

I feel like I've been cock-blocked at every step of the way- I worked my tail off and paid for my handgun in full, the old man doesn't want the gun in my possession in Baton Rouge for some odd reason, and they've got me freaking out about the gun laws. In the middle of all this I'm busting tail trying to get a shooting team together for LSU. Ironic.

Not sure if LA. has a firearm pre-emption law so maybe Baton Rouge has a local ordinance against under 21 firearm possession.

Those are USPSA clubs in your state. Not sure which one is closest.

From what I've found LA has pretty lax firearms laws. Maybe you should go to some non parenting lawyers that know more about LA. firearms law. Not sure what kind of Laywers your parents are but it sounds like they MAY be mistaken. But I'm not fully versed in LA. firearms laws.

ETA-again from what I've found the only ones that can't sell a pistol to an under 21 year old person is people or shops that have a Federal Firearms License.

We do have lax firearms laws. I saw one of my police officer friends at work today (mother's a prosecutor and I knew a few of the cops before the dept. dissolved), and he used to do IDPA, so I asked him. Apparently I should be able to just show up with my XD and compete.

I'll solve the "being able to form a pistol team at my college, but not being able to have my personal weapon at my residence" problem pretty quickly, it's just that finding shooters who are over 21 and can split some 9mm with me is going to be a challenge.

Luckily for my practice sessions, if we don't get a team started so that we can have one legal team member order all our ammo (and we'll of course put up the cash for our own rounds), one of my buddies just bought a 9mm Beretta Px4 and is dying to take it to the range. So I can count on having a shooting buddy.

Go to Wal-mart and tell them you are using it in a Carbine when they ask if it's for a pistol.

Or like some guys say they do. Oh it's for a Machine Gun LOL
