First IDPA Shoot

I just did my first IDPA shoot earlier this evening and it was some serious fun!! I've only been shooting for about 4 months so I definitely don't have the experience of most of the shooters who were there. Despite that, everyone was very helpful and informative. I must say, though, that buzzer REALLY releases the adrenaline. I had failures tonight that I've NEVER had on the practice range. STUPID stuff like forgetting to release the slide after a reload. DOH!!

If you've never tried it, check it out. It's a completely different game when there are 6 targets that you need to engage - some of which may be moving - and you have to change positions and reload, as well. Oh, and don't shoot the hostages!! I guess range time will be BORING, now. But I sure look forward to Wednesday fortnight.

Whit

Congrats on getting your feet wet. Soon clearing jams will be an instinct. So will reloads. It's not tactical training but you gain a lot from it that can be applied to a home defense situation.

Yes, lane shooting will become boring now that you've experienced IDPA. IDPA really stands for I Don't Practice Anymore. )

Just don't completely throw out your regular "square" range time either. It's helpful and can continue to improve your shooting skills.

Also check out on trying to get into a defensive pistol class or something. I'm not talking about a CHL course either (what you learn there helps you legally IMO not really in your shooting).

I've got my first defensive handgun class coming up on Sat. and can't wait for it to get there. I plan to continue to take classes like what I'm going to, to expand my knowledge.

Glad you had fun at your first shoot. I love to shoot IDPA but don't get to go near as much as I would like.

Keep having fun

You will find yourself using regular range time to not just shoot but to work on drills and techniques to help with your IDPA.

Correct! On your regular range time, its a great time to practice speed reloads, and reloads with retention.

Congratulations, it only gets funner aas you continue, good luck!
