Shooting on the move

Anybody have ant tips or tricks for shooting on the move (both freestyle and off hand). Both forward and backward movements need improvement. I try toe/heal fire backing up and visa versa going forward. I'm moving very slow when I practice and still can't shoot a decent group.

I have been trying to improve this part of my shooting but I am struggling with consistency. Looking for a solid training routine for my practice sessions .

Definately toe-to-heel backing up and heel-to-toe going forward. Crouch more than you would shooting static--lower center of gravity. It takes stricter front sight focus than shooting static.

Also, practice the movement at home carrying a full glass of water; trying not to spill will help get rid of the "bounce". (Beer works better for me as I am more determined not to spill beer than water)

Point Shooting Progressions is a course taught by Roger Phillips for Suarez International that will teach you all that, and much more. Well worth the weekend to do it. Later this year he will be teaching this in LA, Vegas and Virginia, if you can get to any of those places.

turn your upper body when looking or aiming at something....for example, if running down an aisle way type set up (targets on left and right) keep your feet pointing in the direction your moving and rotate your upper body to engage.

also like mentioned above, heel to toe forward and toe to heel backward. The low center of gravity is also a good suggestion.

Shooting while moving

A friend who shoots Master in IDPA showed me a good tip last week. Pull your arms closer in to your body. This reduces the bounce effect of moving. Try this walking with a glass of water and you will see the difference.

ROFL, who'd of thunk being in marching band would come in handy in situations like this? Thanks to that, I can turn 90* either way while my feet move forward, and have minimal movement in my upper body. I can do this moving backwards as well. I find the key to little/no upper body movement is to stay on you toes when moving back. Works out your calves quite a bit.

Joeywhat, I had the same experience. I wasn't the best marcher, but now that I'm out of high school and into competition I'm thinking, "Damn, I should go for the first week of band camp this year."

Todd Jarrett has instructional videos posted on youtube for this.

I like to work shooting on the move quite a bit in dry fire. You can notice the sites bounce around like crazy if you do things wrong. Recoil can really distract from seeing what is happening.
It sounds like you have a good grasp of the technique… you just need to give it some time and work with it.
