Check out their website: International Defensive Pistol Association

They have the rule book online also and you can look to see the pistols that are permitted, the legal and illegal modifications.

You may also check the website for a list of local clubs near you. You may be surprised.

So... are the XD 9 and .40 Tactical pistols "IDPA Approved"?
The second match I shot, I ended up winning my division for the night and beat a few guys who were higher up the flagpole than me. Just focus on accuracy, speed will come later. I use my XD Tactical .45 in the CDP class with the Springfield paddle holster and the mag holster that came in the accessory pack. Works great. Give it a try, it will definately make you a better shooter and you may very well win.

I shoot three matches a month...IDPA, IPSC, and carbine/pistol combo. They are great fun. I encourage you to find a club and go to a match. You'll be hooked.

They are approved for use in IDPA as long as the gun is not ported. It shoots in ESP. I shoot mine at the local matches. Always a good time.

The only problem I have with IDPA is the same problem I have with "Production" division with USPSA. The freakin' 10 round mag limit

During my first year of IDPA, I shot with my concealed carry gear because I wanted to go through that motion of pulling my shirt up, drawing my XD40sc from my Crossbreed Supertuck, and getting my sight picture quick, and firing as fast as I can while staying accurate. You just can't do that at most straight lane gun ranges. I have noticed that during lane shooting, I can find my target quicker and pop off my shots faster and still have just one jagged hole in my target at 7 yards. I actually have to slow down between shots or the Range Officer will kick me out.

I think you are going to find that statement to be exceptionally incorrect after you have shot IDPA for a while.

Sight/target acquisition, reloads, malfunction recovery, target transitions, shooting from behind barricades and shooting on the move are all skills that are dramatically improved by IDPA. You may not be the next Rob Leatham or Dave Sevigny, but you will become more comfortable with these actions, and thereby become a better shooter.

Try it. Other than the ammo costs, you're going to love it.

The 10-round limit in production and IDPA is fantastic.

1. It prevents the arms race of who can show up with the highest capacity gun.
2. It allows the sports to be played in all states without fear of law enforcement.
3. It allows all calibers and most guns to play. Where there is no capacity limit, one caliber will rule the day.
4. It makes the sports a test of a shooter's ability with their chosen gun and caliber. NOT a test of who can buy the gun with the biggest magazine.

just my opinion
