IDPA "Combat Capture/Pickup"
A sweet idea that has been alot of fun.
1. Everyone puts their unloaded gun on a table facing in a safe direction with two magazines. 2. When you are called you take the gun to the LEFT of YOUR gun. The first shooter takes the LAST gun. 3. Put the extra magazine in your pocket 4. Start the course from low-ready 5. Run the course with your new "battlefield pick up" gun! Fun to try other people's weapons and add a new element of "surprise" to your IDPA league. Be weary of police weapons. Ussually the public can't shoot a police gun due to liability reasons so have a "loaner" picked out just in case. Credit for this idea is given to BCoyote of the AR15Armory.com forums. |

Only problem is that there are different gun divisions in IDPA. The randomness of this process could screw up final results within each division.

The 2006 S&W indoor IDPA championships had you picking up a M&P to finish the rest of the stage. My old range in AK had us using a 22 pistol(not legal in IDPA) to shoot a bad guy with then take "his" gun and use it against the rest of the "mobsters" that took you hostage! The TX state IDPA Championships had you in a "grave" where you knocked down a steel simulating a bad guy's leg, you then took his dropped 38sp snubby and shot 2 targets. You then jumped out of the "grave" and mved to the IDPA box that had you gun and one magazine where you loaded and shot 3 more targets.

We do this in ours. The last time we did it I ended up with a .38 revolver and speed loaders. I know zit about revolvers. I was running the targets, and after the 6, I got click on the next target. Took me a second to figure out why, and then how to reload the darn thing. What a hoot. I was surprised that my shooting was not too bad either. It did have a very nice DA pull.

They could be issues if some one picked up one of my guns. I like pretty light trigger and it could be unsafe for some if they aren't familiar with similar setups.
We have done a stock type gun in stages, pick it up and do part of the stage and then get yours and finish it up. Wheel guns throw some folks for a loop. Variety is good though.

Well, I guess I should explain that we shoot non-sanctioned every Wednesday night as a "practice" night. We let everyone shoot and do not enforce rules on guns. We let some lady shoot a Walther P22 and another guy bring his race gun. We really only split between pistol and revolver although I have never seen a revolver there. We have about 20 shooters. It is very close and personal and we have a lot of fun.

When I was home for the holidays I shot a match at the S&W range in Springfield MA and they had a Dirty Harry stage where you had to pickup a 44 Mag for the first two targets.
The rounds were downloaded but I still think it gave the wheel gun guys an advantage. That match also had the first low light and total darkness stages I had ever shot. |
