Do not buy the Uncle Mike's Kydex holster. It is illegal for IDPA.

If you are looking to start cheap, consider Fobus for the holster and mag pouches. They work great for beginners, are inexpensive, and are worth holding onto after you upgrade down the road in case a buddy needs to borrow a holster. I would stay away from the Nylon holsters because they just don't provide a reasonable amount of support of competition.

Start inexpensively and talk to people before you start spending a lot of dollars. Find out what they use and WHY they chose it. See if their logic works for you.

Remember that Glocks have been around since the start of IDPA, whereas XDs and M&Ps haven't. Aside from it being the most popular law enforcement pistol in the US, also consider that Glocks get to compete in the "double-action pistol" division. Their consistent trigger pull gives them a significant advantage over traditional DA/SA Sig or Beretta.

M&Ps are starting to show up more, but a) they are only a recent addition to the game and b) they come into a field that already has a large number of offerings in the polymer gun/consistent trigger pull category. They are nice guns, but just don't do it for me as much as my XD does.
