I would really like to get into some sort of competition with my XD. No I don’t consider myself some world class shot. I would just like to get into competition for experience and enjoyment.
Those of you who compete with .45 ACP XDs: Which XD do you use? service/ tactical/ or compact versions of either? Is the Service better for one type of competition and Tactical better for another? What upgrades do you suggest / have you made to your XD for competition? What kind of competition do you participate in? What kind of rules are there about upgrading XDs for competition? Lots of questions. Chapie+ |

Try GSSF. Maybe nobody'll look too closely at your XD!

I am shooting USPSA Production division with my XD-45ACP Tactical. I have installed a reduce stiffness trigger spring and sear spring. I have also got one of Don's skinny guide rods and am running a lighter 18lbs recoil spring to help with reliability of my Minor Power Factor loads.
The Tactical has the longest sight radius so for most of the Practical Pistol games (USPSA, IDPA and similar) the longer sight radius is helpful. The longer heaver slide of the Tactical also helps soften the recoil another advantage. Rambling mcb |

SSP & ESP are two of the Divisions within IDPA. The type and caliber of the pistol determines which Division your compete in.

Idpa
I compete in IDPA with my 45ACP service. It is box stock. If you you shoot ESP(enhanced service pistol) your competeing against other 45's and that is straight from the mouth of Phil Strader. Your first time out no one is truly competative anyway its not about who is fater or better than who. Its about having fun and participating in one of the best sports out there as far as im concerned. Later on down the road you can do some mods to your gun like grip tape, trigger, ajustable sites but the whole point of Idpa is to shoot what you carry on a daily bases is a simulated gun fight.
Thats my 2 cents. |

The Xd right out of the box is a great shooting gun. I have both 45 tactical and 9 tactical. I shoot both of them in IDPA. Just start shooting the gun as is. Especially the 45 will get smoother as you shoot it more. For competition, I would especially use tactical length guns. Longer sight radius, usually means little more stable platform(less muzzle rise). If you start shooting, and find yourself wanting to be more competitive, send your gun to Springer and tell them exactly what kind of trigger you want. You can get a competitive trigger with very light trigger weight like 2.5 pounds, or get the concealed carry trigger which give you 4 lb trigger pull. The over travel and reset will be dramatically reduced. That means that your finger has to pull the trigger back less distance to fire the gun, and that amount of foward movement after the shot, to reset the trigger to shoot again is reduced. Be confident that you have a great gun, have fun and be safe. Remember that the smell of burnt gun powder is sweet, especially out of a XD!

You can't shoot .45 1911's in ESP as they are in CDP division.
