Those of you who compete with .45 ACP XDs:

Which XD do you use? service/ tactical/ or compact versions of either?

Is the Service better for one type of competition and Tactical better for another?

What upgrades do you suggest / have you made to your XD for competition?

What kind of competition do you participate in?

What kind of rules are there about upgrading XDs for competition?

Lots of questions.

I am a IDPA Safety officer, you can shoot a 45 in ESP if your loads don't make major power factor. I know a couple of guys that make minor power factor 45 loads to specifically shoot ESP in IDPA. FYI

In IDPA, to clarify in general, CDP if for single action 45's, ESP is for single action minor power factor guns(40's & 9mm), SSP is for guns that continue to cock the gun before the striker fires, like glocks, sigs, and other guns that have dropped hammers or cocking triggers. Since XD's are cocked and the trigger just allows the firing pin to be released to fire the gun, it is detemined by IDPA as a single action pistol. FYI

Really I shot my first IDPA Match with my 45 in SSP and no one said a thing. But it was also a local match. Im shooting CDP next time im just too slow with my followups to compete against the 9mm.

Any gun that can shoot CDP can also shoot ESP.

You can shoot Major in ESP. There just won't be any advantage.

In USPSA the XD45 can be shot in Production class, but you are at a disadvantage because it's a "Minor" scored division and you would be competing against light recoiling 9mms.

Also, 45 ammo is about twice as expensive as 9mm. So if you shoot a couple of matches a month, a 9mm can save you 30-50$ a month with cheap factory ammo.

You could shoot in Limited 10 where you need to be "Major" but would be competing against true single action 1911s and 2011s. I would consider this only a minor disadvantage.

You really wouldn't want to shoot Limited, due to the same reasons as L10 plus you would be at a magazine capacity disadvantage.

Personally, if I were you, I'd shoot L10.

Actually if you reload the XD-45ACP can make a pretty nice production gun. With 200 or 230 grain bullets are going pretty slow (<700fps) to make minor you can use really cheap cowboy action (softer alloy) lead bullets and not have a leading problem. With a skinny Don's guide rod and 18lbs spring my XD-45ACP tactical ran pretty good with loads as low as 139PF. My reloads are costing me ~$6 a box (50).

The larger bullet holes of the 45 are always a plus when your close to a scoring line.

That huge opening in the grip for the 45 double stack magazine works almost as well as a magazine well on a smaller gun.

If your shooting factory ammunition then L-10 probably is the best spot for the XD-45ACP but if your reloading I think you can make a real nice production gun out of the XD-45ACP. I'm going to give it a try this summer.
