Another IDPA newb question...ammo
I was wondering what kind of ammo I could use. I have an XD9 service. Do I have to shoot defense ammo only. That would be quite expensive. Can I use the same type I use for the range? I looked in the rule book and it had a formula for figuring out the ammo using the weight X velocity. Is the weight the "grain" rating?

I use 9mm Blazer. It works fine, and meets the power rating. And yes, the weight is in grains.

I use factory ammo. It's cheap. 115 gr WWB or CCI Blazer.

Yes, the weight is the grain measurement. Pretty much every factory ammo will meet the power requirements for IDPA's ESP Division. It's a matter of finding the ammo that meets your pocketbook and feeds reliably in your gun. For me, it was the Winchester White Box bulk packs sold at Wal-Mart (which usually reached 138,000 PF - 115gr. bullet moving at 1200 fps). The power factor becomes an issue when you get into reloading. Serious competitors will load their own ammo to get as close to the 125,000 PF minimum as possible for the lowest amount of recoil. -Jim |
