IDPA newbie

Tonight I will attend my first IDPA competition. I plan on bringing my XD 40 service and accessories (holster, mags, mag holster, ear muffs and glasses). For now I just have the holster that came with the XD, eventually I will upgrade but for now I just want to see if I like IDPA.

I have read through the rules for IDPA and have a basic understanding of them. Is there anything I should bring that I did not list above? I know the most important thing is to remember the 4 safety rules, but is there any other infomation that anybody wants to pass along?

I will try to post my experience of IDPA tomorrow.

If I can make two suggestions.

1. Go at your own pace. Don't feel like you need to shoot fast because someone else shot fast. The name of the game is accuracy and every point you drop is 1/2 second. Get your hits.

2. That "buzzer" is just telling you to start shooting. It is not telling you to run, nor is it telling you to to remove any/all logic from your mind or to shoot any/all motor skills from your butt.

In the end, have fun. It is about fun and nothing more.

Here is the advice I give to anyone new shooter to the line. First make sure you really understand the course of fire if not ask questions. Let the RSO know you are a new shooter and they will help you out a ton. Then follow the directions. Most importantly shoot safely, shoot calmly, remember accuracy counts and the speed will come with time and practice.

I must warn you though you might find it addictive. I watched a match then went back and shot the next weekend and have been to every match I can make since then.

I had a great time at the meet. I did ok for my first time, one failure to nuetralize (last target of the night). Was definitely able to identify areas I had trouble with, ex 20-25 yd shots, accuring sight picture after drawing, and tactical reloads. Still not sure why they make us retain the magazine, but those are the rules. Maybe 25% of the people did not have their guns/magazines covered with a jacket or something.

I will definitely be going back, but first I will be working on the previously mentioned problem areas. One question is I have, how do you accure your sight picture after drawing? Do you bring the gun up to your chest then extend your arms or just swing your arms up and line the sights up at arms length? I will probably be shooting lots of imaginary holes in the tv this weekend.

You retain the magazine because in a real life shootout you may need those extra rounds.
